Transfer of the technology for generating energy from wood and anchoring the know-how at Kragujevac University
Dahlem-Schmidtheim/Neufahn. – ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG and Spanner Re2 GmbH are the winners of the „developpp.de“ ideas competition organised by the „Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)“ with the „German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH. From 01 September 2013 GIZ will be supporting the joint project with Serbia’s Kragujevac University which is entitled „Transfer of the technology for generating energy from wood and anchoring the know-how at Kragujevac University“. The University of Zittau/Görlitz, which leads research in Germany into generating energy from wood, is also involved as a scientific partner.
Huge potential: 27 % of energy in Serbia to be generated from renewable resources by 2020
Serbia’s energy sector is currently suffering from a development backlog because of technical defects and lack of investment in the 1990s. Consequently district heating grids were underused or shut down in the past, with the result that many households had to rely on inefficient electric radiators or wood-fired heating. In addition expensive primary energy sources such as oil and gas were imported, and there was little productive use of the country’s own sustainable renewable resources.
Because of this Serbia offers considerable sales potential for wood-fired energy generation plants with output of up to 45 kW. The plants can replace conventional wood-burning stoves and, thanks to their significantly higher level of effectiveness, not only produce more heat at improved emission values, but also generate electricity at the same time. They can be fired by wood residues or forestry waste, in other words biogenic materials for which there was no use in the past.
The aim of the project is to train, in cooperation with Kragujevac University, specialist technicians who will in future plan, set up and operate wood-fired electricity generating plants in Serbia. In the three years of the project at least 10 lecturers and instructors are to be familiarised with the subject, while 10 students per year will complete the teaching programme. In order to make the course as practically relevant as possible and provide the academic staff with further opportunities for research, Spanner Re2 will be installing a pilot plant on the site of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Kraljevo as a facility for demonstrations and training. The project is planned for a period of three years at an overall investment of approx. 460,000 euros.
