Sustainability all along the line
Protecting the environment and operating economically: the „Ökoprofit“ project encourages companies to improve their level of environmental protection in their operations, reduce energy consumption and cut costs at the same time. Rehm Thermal Systems (http://www.rehm-group.com) and Rehm BlechTec have succeeded in doing just that. With the award of this eco-label, the manufacturer of reflow soldering systems, coating and drying systems and associated sheet metal processing, based in the Swabian town of Blaubeuren, has been certified as an „Ökoprofit“ company. The certification acknowledges the success of the Rehm Group in implementing key measures to promote the sustainable use of resources and demonstrably reduce the burden on the environment. „We have managed to significantly improve the environmental and energy management of our operations within just one year. This award confirms that we“re on the right track,“ emphasises Günter Dieckmann, „Ökoprofit“ Project Manager and Quality Manager at Rehm.
The partnership project involving IHK Ulm, IHK Bodensee-Oberschwaben, IWU Neu-Ulm, the town of Lindau and regional businesses focuses in particular on energy management, waste and recycling, occupational safety and health, legal and environmental monitoring and the conscientious handling of hazardous substances. Environmental protection and sustainable production are established guiding principles at Rehm. With its innovative technologies and a well-thought-out energy concept, Rehm meets all the requirements of a modern manufacturing company. „Using raw materials suppliers from the region, we manufacture systems that more than hold their own in the global market. Low material consumption and reliable recycling of valuable materials in production, as well as short transport routes and robust, long-lasting and retrofittable equipment with low energy consumption and minimum emissions are the basis of our product philosophy“, explains Günter Dieckmann. Using the new VisionXP+ reflow convection soldering system, customers can use up to 20 % less energy in production and produce an average of 10 tonnes less CO2 per year.
With respect to all its internal operations, Rehm has also implemented a host of changes. By installing LED lighting systems in the production halls, setting up optimum heat recovery and optimising the compressed air supply, the company has successfully minimised power consumption in these areas and, as a result, has significantly reduced electricity costs.
In waste management, too, the environmental specialists came up with a clever solution. Adopting the Karopack® concept, old cardboard boxes are reprocessed into reusable cushion pads and used for padding the spare part packages during transport. Consequently, Rehm is able to offer its customers CO2-neutral packaging.
What is more, Rehm Thermal Systems has successfully optimised its hazardous materials management system. Company experts are continuously seeking ways to minimise the volume of hazardous substances used in production, while continuing to switch over to environmentally friendly materials. „We“re doing everything we can to ensure that the sustainable use of resources is even more integrated into our work processes. Receiving this „Ökoprofit“ company distinction motivates us to think of how we can keep heading in this direction,“ remarks Günter Dieckmann.
Rehm Thermal Systems was founded in 1990 by Johannes Rehm and is a provider of reflow soldering systems and drying systems for the electronics industry as well as a manufacturer of fast firing systems and solar dryers for the metallization of solar cells. With „Simply. More. Ideas.“ our goal is to become technological leaders in all areas of production and offer our customers sustainable, future-oriented products.
