Back to the roots: Nine years ago the very first National Osteology Symposium was held in Moscow. The Foundation returned in October 2014 with a highly successful National Symposium and a hot programme in Moscow, already in the grip of winter.
Further information on the Osteology National SymposiaAt the National Osteology Symposium there were no signs of the icy cold prevailing outside in Russia at the end of October. 500 participants registered for the two-day event in the prestigious Lotte Hotel in Moscow from 25 to 26 October 2014 to catch up on the hottest and newest trends in oral restoration. The event held under the motto „Two inspiring days of new ideas and new friends“ was sold out.
It was the second time a National Symposium had taken place in the Russian capital. Back in 2005, the very first National Symposium of the Osteology Foundation was staged in Moscow. So the 2014 event was like going back to the Foundation’s roots.
The scientific programme entitled „Current concepts and future demands in oral tissue regeneration“ spanned all aspects of oral regeneration: current techniques in soft tissue regeneration were covered, as well as sophisticated treatment concepts for bone regeneration. Handling complications was another main topic in the scientific programme on the first day of the National Symposium.
The presentations from the national and international speakers attracted great interest among the participants, as was also reflected in the lively discussions and numerous questions. Often the time was too scarce to answer all the questions and the discussions had to be curtailed or postponed to the breaks. To avoid any communication problems between international and national participants and speakers, all presentations were simultaneously translated into English or Russian.
A further highlight of the scientific programme compiled by Chairmen Christoph Hämmerle, Switzerland, and Anatoly Kulakov, Russia, was the Interactive Forum, in which cases were firstly presented and then discussed by a team of international experts. The participants explained that they found it particularly interesting, as well as exciting, to hear different opinions and approaches from the various experts.
An „Implant Forum“ took place on the second day of the National Osteology Symposium with six further presentations from international speakers. These presentations were all organised by different sponsors from industry, yet their contents showed a high degree of neutrality and they were scientifically sound.
Various hands-on workshops were also run on the second day, true to the Osteology Foundation’s motto: „Linking science and practice“. One workshop with the speakers Christoph Hämmerle and Daniel Thoma was organized directly by the Foundation, and four others were provided by sponsors of the Symposium. All workshops met with strong interest and were very popular. Two further theoretical sponsor workshops were also very well attended.
Christoph Hämmerle and Daniel Thoma were delighted and impressed by the Osteology Workshop: „The Russian surgeons‘ skills were very good“, they reported. „Thanks to the high level of the participants, this workshop was really outstanding.“
The scientific programme was accompanied by a poster exhibition where the latest research insights were presented. Three of the posters were presented with awards by the jurors Kristian Badalyan, Russia, and Daniel Thoma, Switzerland, and the authors received the opportunity to introduce themselves and their work in a five-minute presentation on the podium.

The National Osteology Symposium in Russia was the last in 2014 – a worthy conclusion to a successful year with great symposia in China, Columbia and Japan. The Osteology Foundation’s motto is „Linking Science with Practice in Regeneration“. The foundation was established in 2003 and its core activities include funding of research projects and organisation of national and international symposia throughout the world. In recent years, the Foundation has expanded its focus. Today, it also offers courses and textbooks specifically for researchers in the field of oral tissue regeneration.
