ACCEPT receives funding from the European Commission in the amount of 2.8 million euros
Berlin, December 20, 2011: Acrolinx, the universities of Edinburgh and Geneva, the software manufacturer Symantec, and the non-profit organization Translators without Borders launched the international research project ACCEPT. The goal of ACCEPT – an acronym for Automated Community Content Editing Portal – is the development of innovative technologies in the field of machine translation. The consortium has just received funding from the European Commission in the amount of 2.8 million euros. The joint project starts in January 2012 for a duration of 36 months.
„We are very excited about this project and it“s especially thrilling to carry out a project together with so many internationally renowned institutions. ACCEPT enables us to develop innovative and new ideas to improve machine translation, especially in the field of community-generated content, and to convert these ideas into actual technology“, explains Dr. Melanie Siegel, Head of Research and Innovation at Acrolinx. „With Symantec we have a long-standing Acrolinx customer in the research team with whom we have already successfully implemented several challenging projects“, adds Dr. Andrew Bredenkamp, CEO at Acrolinx.
Machine Translation for Web 2.0
Background for the research project is the fact that the use of machine translation systems in different areas is increasing rapidly. At the same time, Web 2.0 permanently democratizes content creation. Especially individual, user-created content for social networks is increasing. Currently, these trends don“t seem to be compatible. The vast amount of different source content makes it impossible for machine translation to produce acceptable results for the translation of content from online networks and internet communities. ACCEPT focuses on this aspect and is looking into new technologies which will improve machine translation especially in the field of social networks. The project focuses on three areas:
– Developing new technology models for content preparation (pre-editing)
– Developing strategies for content post-processing (post-editing)
– Integrating innovative text analysis tools into technologies for the development of statistical machine translation
Collaboration of leading partners in the field of language technology
ACCEPT joins Acrolinx, the leading manufacturer in multilingual enterprise solutions, together with the universities of Edinburgh and Geneva, both renowned for their research centers in the field of machine translation. Also participating are Symantec and Translators without Borders, two highly experienced users of machine translation systems, who will add their extensive experience of online communities and internet forums.
