DYNAdent – 10 years, 100 systems

Fatigue testing of endosseous tooth implants – Testing machine has become the industry standard.

At the 41st International Dental Show IDS, DYNA-MESS will be displaying its DYNAdent 14801 systems for the testing of dental implants in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14801 and, on that occasion, celebrate the supply of its one-hundredth system to a manufacturer of implants.

DYNA-MESS manufactured the first DYNAdent testing system in 2014. Last year – ten years after the first machine – the company commissioned the one-hundredth DYNAdent system at an implants manufacturer in South Korea.

DYNA-MESS developed the DYNAdent series as a complete stand-alone solution specifically for the dynamic fatigue testing of endosseous dental implants in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14801. The systems comply with all the requirements specified in this standard, but nevertheless take up just a fraction of the footprint of the universal testing machines previously used. Moreover, they are very easy to use and do not need compressed air or hydraulic oil to operate.

„DYNAdent has become the industry standard: While the systems were initially mostly used at universities for research purposes, our machines are today also used by leading producers of dental materials and implants for the fatigue testing of their products,“ says Jörn Seemann, Managing Director of DYNA-MESS.

DYNA-MESS supplies two versions of the machine: DYNA1dent for the testing of single implants, and DYNA5dent for the simultaneous testing of up to five specimens. The latter machines achieve an 80 percent reduction in testing time compared to single-item testing … an important point, in particular, for testing procedures that require several millions of load cycles – as, for example, for the determination of an S-N curve (Wöhler curve) – or the testing of several implants that, if done successively, would take a very long time.

The underlying technology

The testing can be performed under in-vivo conditions in a saline solution of 37 °C at a frequency of 2 Hz or, without a fluid, at a frequency of 15 Hz. The testing system can apply sinusoidal forces of up to 600 N, thus enabling the recording of S-N curves over several million cycles.

In particular, the DYNA5dent system provides very much flexibility for the user: Each of the five testing bases can be controlled separately from one another. Thus, it is possible, for example, to simultaneously test three specimens dynamically and two statically. In terms of costs, it is much more economical to invest in one machine that can handle five test specimens at the same instead of having five separate systems.

A well-known Swiss manufacturer of implants was one of the first to use these testing machines in his operations. He currently operates more than 50 testing stations worldwide: „With DYNAdent, we can be sure that everything – the machine itself, the measuring technology, the handling, and the evaluation of the measurements – fully complies with the requirements of the standard. The loading cycle of each individual specimen corresponds exactly to the specimen clamping, loading angle and load application requirements specified in the implants testing standard. Even after the billions of load cycles that we have meanwhile performed, the systems still operate with the same high reliability.“

Easy to handle and flexible to use

All DYNAdent systems are supplied with an all-in-one PC that can be operated via a keyboard or the touchscreen. The system uses the DYNATCC-software which is recognized as very user friendly by the operators. The software package includes the user administration, a specimen library, a straightforward, easy to perform test parameterization and the continuous storing of all results. Thus, at the end of a test, it is not only possible to assess the resulting damage, but also to analyze the entire damaging process during the course of the test.

The testing arrangement can be conveniently changed for other tests, such as three- or four-point bending tests of ceramic rods, bending tests of dental bridges or pressure tests.

About DYNA-MESS

DYNA-MESS Prüfsysteme GmbH designs and manufactures high-tech systems for the mechanical testing of materials, components and entire equipment units. The company was founded in Aachen, Germany, in 1985. In 2001, DYNA-MESS moved to its current headquarters in the town of Stolberg, near Aachen.

DYNA-MESS systems are used in numerous industries and applications, such as in the automotive industry for static and dynamic testing of car seats, steering wheels and pedals, in medical technology for measuring the properties of dental implants and prostheses, and in structural engineering for analyzing the behaviour of structures.

DYNA-MESS supplies a wide range of systems for tensile, pressure, bending, torsion and vibration testing. The machines are equipped with servohydraulic, servopneumatic or electric actuation systems. They are supplied complete with all measuring and control (including closed loop) electronics and include user-friendly, intuitive PC-based application software.

The product range comprises three categories:

Universal testing systems for test labs, such as the company“s highly versatile two-column machines used worldwide for testing tasks such as the determination of fatigue and wear behaviour and for end-of-life tests of components and assemblies under static or dynamic loading.

Testing systems for specific applications: These systems are tailored to conform to the requirements of specific testing standards and manufactured in series. Various of these systems, such as DYNAdent for the testing of dental implants in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14 801, have become well established worldwide in their respective industries.

Customized systems are testing machines developed, manufactured and commissioned to customer specifications. An example is a system developed for the testing of rotor blades for wind power plants.

The company“s worldwide customer base mainly includes companies from industry, independent testing laboratories, universities and research institutes. DYNA-MESS has a team of 35 employees at its headquarters in Stolberg near Aachen and a worldwide network of branches and representations.
