Siempelkamp upgrades press line for railway vehicle wheels

Heavy parts for the new press for Durgapur will be manufactured at Siempelkamp Foundry in Krefeld.

State-of-the-art control system and new press frame for increased quality and throughput.

Siempelkamp received from the Durgapur Steel Plant, India, the order to upgrade the three presses of the wheel line in the Durgapur plant. The project includes the new electrical and hydraulic controls for all presses, the supply of new mechanical components as well as a new press frame for the 20 MN dishing press.

Durgapur Steel manufactures approximately 55,000 wheels for locomotives and passenger rail cars each year for the Indian market. The company is the only manufacturer of forged railway vehicle wheels in India.

The wheel line at the Durgapur plant, approximately 170 km north-west of Kolkata/India, includes a hydraulic 63/12 MN press for pre-forming and piercing of wheels, a 20 MN dishing press, supplied and started up by Siempelkamp in 1993, as well as a 3 MN marking press. After almost 20 years of operation the available controls have become outdated. Furthermore, several mechanical components were worn after many years of use.

Siempelkamp will equip all three presses with a new control and replace individual components of the mechanical and hydraulic systems.

Next to increasing production capacity, the objective of the project is to increase the quality of the wheels. This is to be accomplished by the precise positioning of the sliding tables and the lifting and centering devices as well as by modern measuring and control technology.

The new control systems are designed with hot standby functionality and their energy supply is redundant in design. Siempelkamp also supplies the interface to the customer’s Management Information System (MIS) via which the press receives its production orders and which returns operating data to the MIS.

Siempelkamp will also supply a new press frame for the 20 MN dishing press and replace it with the existing one. Siempelkamp optimized the frame by using FEM calculations and simulations which incorporated the mechanical, hydraulic and control subsystems.

Seven weeks have been scheduled for the installation of the new elements from the shutdown of the existing presses to the production start of the upgraded line in early summer of 2015.
