Dr. Ferracani presents initial experience with new laser technology at a congress in Buenos Aires – Internal Valvuloplasty (VLI) enables valve repair for the first time – First prize for repair of venous valves from the Society of Phlebologie and Lymphology
Jena, 13. June 2013 – At the 20. Congress of the Argentinean Society of Phlebologie and Lymphology, which took place from 16th till 18th May 2013, specialists informed and discussed about the newest developments of their field. The congress´ highlight: Awarding the prize of the Society of Phlebologie and Lymphology. This year, it was awarded to Dr. Ferracani for the treatment of defect venous valves with Internal Valvuloplasty (VLI).
Defect venous valves impair the function of the affected vein to transport blood back to the heart. Due to this, varicose veins develop which can cause, besides cosmetic issues, also severe medical problems. For a long time, varicose veins were removed during surgery, which does not only pose a major procedure, but is also accompanied by severe side effects. For several years, biolitec has provided doctors with ELVeS Radial™ – a laser therapy that removes varicose veins with nearly no pain and little side effects and whose advantages have already been approved by several scientific studies.
The Internal Valvuloplasty (VLI) represents an important step in development to further optimize the laser treatment of sickened veins. Starting point of the development was the desire uttered among experts to focus on restoring the vein’s function rather than removing it completely. Dr. Ferracani wanted to an-swer the question if already existing technology could be applied to solve this task.
To initially test this new therapeutical method, he treated a small number of patients with ELVeS Radial™ fibres of biolitec to repair the defect venous valves. The results achieved are very promising, as circumference and flow reduction could be reduced, and that on a longer period of time.
Dr. Ferracani presented this new method to an international specialist audience at the 20th Congress of the Argentinean Society of Phlebologie and Lymphology, which awarded him with the first prize for his pioneering work. In the future new research and large number of cases shall further confirm the mode of operation of this method.
