TRES – The third generation of the BOTTA design three-hand watch

TRES - The third generation of the BOTTA design three-hand watch

Königstein im Taunus, 11 December 2018:
BOTTA design stands for „modern functionalism“ in product design. In the wristwatch sector, the brand from Königstein im Taunus is best known as the pioneer of the one-hand watch and its flagship model, the UNO.

The circular watch with the instrumental look is a prime example of functionally-oriented product design. It is also the starting point for the new watch category „single-hand watches“. However, the design team around Klaus Botta does not only develop watches with a single hand. In fact BOTTA design also offers wristwatches with several hands.

Today the German brand presents the third generation of its three-hand classic: the TRES.

The TRES series fits well in the BOTTA design model range
While single-handed watches encourage a more generous use of time, the traditional TRES display principle is immediately known and familiar. The precise scale of the three-hand watch enables it to be read to the second. The TRES thus appeals to a somewhat broader audience than the single-hand watches of the BOTTA design brand.

The design reflects the brand“s identity very well. Here, too, you can see the sobriety and clarity that typically characterize BOTTA models. The designers from the Taunus region kept the trend of doing without superfluous ornaments or conventional status symbols in the third generation of the TRES series.

Cleverly designed functionality
At first glance, you can only see the three hands and a very fine scale for the hours and minutes or seconds. Only a closer look reveals the number of hours in the area between the minute and the edge of the case. The contrast is relatively low, as the numbers are printed in the colour of the dial. They have a certain three-dimensionality and a gloss effect which renders them recognizable.

The readability of the watch is nonetheless not compromised because the reading is guided by the clear grid of the hour markings and is not distracted by other displays or ornaments. The clearly weighted hands also make a positive contribution here.

The new TRES thus meets the standards set by BOTTA design for clear, logical design.

Klaus Botta attaches great importance to technical high quality and longevity of the design
The new TRES model also meets both these criteria. The materials and components used, such as double-curved sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides.
The design is timeless, just like the predecessors of this series have already proven it with models designed in 1995 and 2006 respectively, which still look contemporary today.

Three case variants in three colours each
BOTTA design offers the new TRES with an ETA-2824-2 automatic movement.
The stainless steel case has a diameter of 44 mm and is available with three dial colours: Pearl White, Pearl Black and All Black. The case of the All Black version has an additional black PVD coating. Its dial scale is also consistently black.
A further sapphire crystal on the high-quality designed back provides a direct view of the Swiss mechanical movement. The version with saddle leather strap and silver case costs €890.

For fans of high-quality quartz watches, there are two case variants: the large 44 mm stainless steel case and the significantly flatter and lighter titanium case with a diameter of 40 mm.
With its compact geometry, the titanium version is also suitable for very narrow wrists.
Both quartz versions are available in the same colours as the automatic watch: Pearl Black, Pearl White and All Black. Prices start at 448 €.

All new TRES models are now available on presale at selected retailers or at botta-design.de.
The delivery begins on 12.12.2018.

Klaus Botta has had a major influence on the watch industry with his philosophical approach to design. Launched in 1986, his UNO one-hand watch was the world’s first wristwatch to use the one-hand principle. Botta-Design timekeepers have long become classics, and are exhibited in the collections of renowned museums around the world. 61 international awards are testimony to the high level of design proficiency. The entire collection, which also includes other mechanical watches and quartz models, is developed and designed at the company’s headquarters in Königstein. The new UNO 24 titan one-hand watch from BOTTA design

The further development of the one-hand classic

The new UNO 24 titan one-hand watch from BOTTA design

UNO 24 titan one-hand watch from BOTTA design

Königstein i. Ts., November 19th 2018:
Presenting the 24 hours of the day with a single rotation of the watch hand was the basic idea behind the UNO 24.
Klaus Botta, known as the pioneer of one-hand watches, developed the first UNO 24 model exactly ten years ago. The dial on his full-day watch showed 24 hours rather than the usual twelve.

The single watch hand, the hour hand, therefore moves only half as quickly around the dial as the hour hand on a conventional twelve-hour watch does.
The day on this watch is presented in analogue graphic form, with each time of the day corresponding to a specific position on the specially designed dial.

The division of the dial into a day half (top) and a night half (bottom) increases clarity and reflects the position of the sun in the sky.
This principle has been used in all UNO 24 models since 2008.
Exactly ten years after the first model was launched, BOTTA design is now offering a new version of its design classic, the UNO 24 titan.

It goes without saying that the 24-hour one-hand principle is also retained in the new model. However, the dial is now somewhat less cluttered, which increases clarity for the wearer. The fact that the ten-minute scale has been moved right to the outside makes it considerably easier to tell the time on this watch.

The differences in the watch case are even more striking. While the case of the previous UNO 24 was made of stainless steel, the new version has a specially-designed titanium case. Weighing a mere 32 grams, it is now roughly 20 % lighter than its predecessor.

Focusing on form and function
Good design is not limited only to the visual appearance of the watch. At BOTTA design, function is very much the focus. Which is why considerable attention was paid when reinterpreting the UNO 24 to the functional design of the underside of the case.

The lugs are partly concealed beneath the case. As a result, the UNO 24 is also suitable for wearers with slim wrists, despite its diameter of 40mm. The sloped sides of the underside of the case allow the wearer maximum freedom of movement in the wrist, while at the same time enabling air to circulate freely.
Thanks to the clever design of the underside, the watch – which is already very slim at just 7.5 mm – appears even slimmer.

Sportlich-elegant in Weißgold – die neue Degussa Limited Edition GMT Herren-Armbanduhr

Sportlich-elegant in Weißgold - die neue Degussa Limited Edition GMT Herren-Armbanduhr

Degussa Limited Edition GMT (Bildquelle: @Degussa Goldhandel)

Tres 24 Titan – the 24-hour titanium watch from Botta-Design

Tres 24 Titan - the 24-hour titanium watch from Botta-Design

TRES 24 Titanium by Botta-Design

Botta-Design stands for „modern functionalism“ in product design. In the wristwatch segment, the Königstein-based brand is known first and foremost for its UNO one-hand watch. This circular watch with the appearance of a precision instrument is a prime example of functionally-oriented product design. It is also considered to have heralded in the new category of „one-hand watches“. Klaus Botta and his development team do not design only watches with a single hour hand, however. Botta-Design also has wristwatches with more than one hand in its range. What all of the different models have in common is the clear logic of their display and their consistently high design standards.

In late 2017, Botta-Design presented its first three-hand 24-hour watch, the TRES 24 Plus in a 45 mm stainless steel case.
This is now followed by the slimmer and more lightweight version of this watch concept, featuring a titanium case with a 40 mm diameter.

While the „midnight mark“ in conventional 24-hour watches is generally to be found at the top, with midday at the bottom, exactly the reverse is the case in Botta-Design“s 24-hour watches. According to Klaus Botta, the justification for this somewhat unusual arrangement is that the dial is laid out to be „synchronous with the sun“. The hour scale precisely reflects the position of the sun in the sky at the time in question. At 12 pm, for example, when the sun is at its zenith, the hour hand also points to the number 12 at the top. At 6 in the morning and at 6 in the evening, when the sun is on the horizon, the hand of the TRES 24 models can also be found at the dial“s „artificial horizon“. Finally, at midnight, when the sun is „under the Earth“, the hour hand also points to the number 0 at the bottom of the dial. At the same time, the hand passes the date line that runs from the centre of the dial to the date window, and the displayed date switches to the next day.

Besides the 24-hour scale on the middle ring of the dial, there is also a second outer scale that shows the minutes and seconds. The two scales are not only distinguishable by their different colours, but are also physically separate. The differences in height between the circular scales correspond to the heights of the respective hands.
Just like the bigger version, the TRES 24 Plus, the TRES 24 Titan is reminiscent of an aircraft instrument with an artificial horizon – the day half at the top, the night half at the bottom. The numbers and markings are designed to make them as easy to read and distinguish between as possible. As with any 24-hour watch, it takes a short period of time to get used to this way of telling the time. Especially at the beginning, the clearly readable hour numbers make it easier to understand the system and tell the time.

The TRES 24 Titan is designed not so much with the average user in mind. It will appeal above all to design afficionados with a penchant for quality. Every aspect of the watch case is carefully designed down to the tiniest detail and features strikingly high-quality craftsmanship. The dial is arranged in a strictly logical and clear manner. The lugs are shaped and positioned in such a way that they exceed the watch diameter only slightly, making the watch very comfortable to wear.

The use of titanium for the case means that an amazingly low overall weight of just 39 g is achieved. Like all watches from this Königstein-based brand, the new TRES 24 Titan is also designed, developed and manufactured in Germany.

A Swiss-made Ronda quartz movement ensures a comfortable and reliable drive system. The dual-domed sapphire glass is antireflective on both sides. The watch is splash-proof to 3 ATM and comes with a two-year manufacturer“s warranty. Just like its sister model, the TRES 24 Titan comes in three different colour versions: with a light dial, a dark dial or a dark dial in a completely black PVD-coated case. The normal price of the watch starts at 448 EUR. The watch will be ready for shipping from the end of July 2018 but can already be ordered at an advance purchase price starting at 398 EUR.

Italienisches Trendlabel to watch

Italienisches Trendlabel to watch

Monrob Kollektion HW 16/17

30 years of the UNO one-hand watch

30 years of the UNO one-hand watch

30 years of the UNO one-hand watch by Klaus Botta

Established 30 years ago, Botta-Design may still be a relatively young watch brand – yet it has already gone down in history, as company founder and owner Klaus Botta developed the world“s very first one-hand wristwatch back in 1986. The UNO (https://www.botta-design.de/en/einzeigeruhr-uno-plus-alpin.html).

Global success thanks to the one-hand principle

In the mid-1980s, Klaus Botta was struck by the increasingly cluttered appearance of most watch dials – rather than improving readability, this had precisely the opposite effect. He vowed to counter this trend with a fundamentally simplified approach to displaying the time.

He soon realized that just one hand is really needed to show the time, so long as the scale is adapted accordingly. This is the same principle used in measuring instruments.
Klaus Botta then designed the UNO“s typical one-hand scale, which nowadays can be found on virtually all Botta one-hand watches – as well as on the one-hand watches of other manufacturers.

Impressively, the layout of the original UNO“s dial that was designed by Klaus Botta remains essentially unchanged to this day.
While the finer details of the scale and the single hand continued to be optimized over the years, the basic logical principle remained the same – and is instantly recognizable in every UNO watch.

Turning a simple watch case into a design object

When designing the watch case, Klaus Botta consistently applied the principles of minimization wherever this made good design sense.
From the original UNO right up to the UNO Titan – the most recent version – all UNO watches boast a circular case basically comprised of an emphatically flat cylinder. Rather than being added onto the watch case as is usually the case, the lugs are incorporated into the structure of the case. This clever design feature gives the case a far more harmonious appearance, even on slimmer wrists.

The UNO exhibits an all-round logical and consistent design, which makes it look like a perfectly crafted sculpture from all angles.

High quality of design and material

Alongside the design details, the materials, technology and workmanship have also been continuously optimized.
Nowadays, the cases of Botta-Design wristwatches achieve the same high technical standards that are normally found only in exclusive Swiss brands. This is partly because our watches are produced in Germany, where – incidentally – watches are also manufactured for the Swiss watchmaking industry.

While the first UNO had to make do with the materials that were commonly used at the time, such as a chrome-plated brass case with mineral glass, today“s design classic boasts a whole host of high-tech materials and technologies:
stainless steel or titanium case (with or without PVD coating)
domed sapphire glass on both sides, which is made even more striking and transparent by double-sided anti-reflective coating
Swiss-made movements with up to 25 jewel bearings
Designed, developed and manufactured in Germany
Direct and personal customer advice, service and support from Botta-Design“s engineers and designers.

Unexpected success

Together with his then distribution partner „WatchPeople“, Klaus Botta initially had a first batch of his UNO one-hand watches produced in Pforzheim.
The watch was an immediate success, which surprised not only Klaus Botta himself but also his then business partner and co-owner of the WatchPeople brand. This man was Manfred Brassler, these days known principally for the Meistersinger watch brand he established in 2001.

In no time at all, the UNO became WatchPeople“s best-known and most successful model. When WatchPeople was sold in 1999, Klaus Botta regained the rights to the UNO model.

The Botta-Design brand is born

Since the Botta-Design team was already responsible for conceptualizing, designing and developing the watch models, production in and around Pforzheim could continue.
The team then began selling the watches through wholesalers abroad and retailers in Germany, as well as directly from their Königstein base via the company“s website www.botta-design.de

Every successful product has its imitators

By its own account, Botta-Design identified some 350 concept copies of the UNO one-hand watch on the market during research it conducted recently. The likenesses range from more or less imaginative interpretations to virtual 1:1 copies.

Klaus Botta appears unperturbed by this trend. After all, copycats merely confirm how attractive the concept is.
„Of course there are much cheaper concept and design copies, but they never attain the quality of the original. What is more, it is hardly possible to surpass the consistency and clarity of the multi-award-winning original in design terms.
Or at least, no-one in the last 30 years has succeeded in doing so,“ says Klaus Botta with justified pride.

Looking back to the past and ahead to the future

In the past, the team of designers from Königstein has repeatedly surprised the watch-buying public with interesting new concepts, including for example the UNO 24, a 24-hour one-hand watch, and the NOVA, the „advanced“ 12-hour one-hand watch.

The team at Botta-Design, the pioneer of the one-hand watch, is again working on a whole host of innovative concepts for the future. As Klaus Botta has announced, these will include not only novel one-hand models but also watches with several hands. Significantly more importance is also to be attached to mechanical watches by the innovative team from Königstein, says the company“s founder.

UNO+ Automatic: The Single-Hand Classic Revisited

BOTTA-Design – Pioneer in Single-Hand Watches

UNO+ Automatic: The Single-Hand Classic Revisited

With his UNO+, Klaus Botta has created a major upgrade of his UNO design with improved readability.

An Icon in Perfection

Königstein im Taunus (Germany), February 2015: Long before the slow movement became trendy, industrial designer Klaus Botta had been interested in a different perception of time. In 1986, he introduced the UNO-the world’s first single-hand watch. With its special face design, the UNO started a boom in the watch market that lasts to this day. And now this design classic returns in a new edition: the UNO+ Automatic (http://www.botta-design.de/en/automatikuhren/einzeigeruhr-uno-plus-carbon.html).

It’s in the Simple Things

Klaus Botta’s motive for constructing the UNO was his desire to create a watch that gives a clear and precise view of the current time at a glance-just like a precision instrument. The first UNO edition became a huge surprise hit. The UNO+ Automatic is a major upgrade to the UNO one-hand watch (http://www.botta-design.de/en/one-hand-watch-uno-automatic.html) design excelling in readability. Botta increased the watch diameter from 40 to 44 millimeters; in combination with the reduced case edge, this gives the watch a generous impression. The dial covers almost the entire area of the watch face, and the maximized scale reaches to the very edge of the dial, thus again improving readability. The double-domed sapphire glass emphasizes the clear and elegant lines of the UNO+ Automatic (http://www.botta-design.de/en/automatikuhren/einzeigeruhr-uno-plus-alpin.html).

Form and Function in Focus

Great design is not just a question of appearance. This is why BOTTA-Design pursues a consistent „form meets function“ approach. Therefore, when creating the UNO+ upgrade, the case back was designed with greatest attention to functionality.

The lugs are hidden below the case back. This makes the UNO+ Automatic perfectly suitable even for the slender wrist despite its diameter of 44 millimeters. The beveled edges of the watch-case back give the wearer maximum room to move. At the same time, this design ensures sufficient air circulation. Thanks to this extraordinary case-back design, the watch, being just 8.8 mm in height, looks even flatter.

BOTTA-Design stands for exquisite design in the best tradition of German watchmaking. All BOTTA-Design watches are entirely designed and manufactured in Germany using only Swiss-made watch movements, like the ETA 2824.2. BOTTA-Design products are available through their website and selected retailers in Germany and abroad.

Botta-Design: UNO 24 NEO with high-contrast display

Botta-Design: UNO 24 NEO with high-contrast display

Botta Design UNO 24 NEO mono hand watch

Klaus Botta, pioneer of the mono hand watch, releases new design

Botta-Design (http://www.botta-design.de/en/) fans will be pleased to hear about our new 24-hour one-hand model. As with all Botta-Design watches, the new version boasts a consistently functional technical design.

The dark grey central hand contrasts sharply with the white-and-grey dial and thus achieves excellent readability – even in unfavourable light conditions.

The four orange quadrant markers divide the 24-hour dial into six-hour segments, making orientation on the dial easier.
The colour orange is also repeated in a small ring in the middle of the dial, lending the watch a striking visual centre.

The carefully balanced combination of the colours white, dark grey and orange give the watch a very fresh and modern look, a colour concept that perfectly matches the futuristic appearance of the display.

The 24-hour mono-hand watch (http://www.botta-design.de/en/uno-24-neo.html) concept developed by Klaus Botta remains unique.
No other watch allows the wearer to assess how far the day has progressed as intuitively as the UNO 24 NEO does.

The new model will doubtless not appeal to everyone, though it will to anyone with a penchant for intelligent concepts that depart from the mainstream – and above all to anyone who appreciates something truly original.

„Things become clearer when you reduce them to their bare essentials.“
Klaus Botta developed the UNO one-hand watch in line with this philosophy back in 1986. Ever since, he has been considered the inventor of the modern one-hand watch – and the pioneer responsible for inspiring a whole series of one-hand watches made by other manufacturers.
Klaus Botta has been designing and creating wristwatches for clients like Junghans AG, Bestform and Watch People since 1986. Botta-Design wristwatches have already received 50 renowned design awards, both in Germany and abroad. Some of them are exhibited in the Chicago Museum of Architecture and Design and the Museum für angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Art) in Frankfurt.
Watches from Botta-Design are characterized by a concentration on the bare essentials. The salient design features of every Botta-Design wristwatch are functional clarity and a high degree of technical aesthetic which is underlined by the choice of materials and the precision of the workmanship.

Weitere Infos: www.detomaso-watches.de
