Walther Trowal has recently commissioned a THM troughed belt continuous shot blast machine for a customer in Mexico that is equipped with a brand new generation of blast turbines. These turbines were specifically designed for shot blasting of aluminum components. With a considerably higher blast media throwing speed the new turbines produce significantly shorter cycle times than the predecessor models.

The Mexican customer already operates very successfully four continuous Trowal shot blast machines. Because of their excellent performance he chose to purchase another THM machine, when he had to expand his production capacity.

Up-and-coming: Aluminum, the gentle blast media

The increasing sales trend at Walther Trowal indicates that ever more customers are switching to aluminum media when shot blasting aluminum components. Because of its lower bulk density aluminum media is a lot gentler than, for example, stainless steel shot. Typical automotive forgings made from aluminum are, for example, steering knuckles or swivel bearings. Aluminum die-castings processed in THM shot blast machines can be all kinds of housings, covers or levers.

Because of its lower density the impact energy of aluminum media on the work pieces is considerably lower compared to other blast media. To offset this limitation Walther Trowal developed turbines with curved throwing blades, which generate a significantly higher blast media throwing speed than straight blades. This, combined with the fact that in THM machines the turbines are located very close to the work pieces, and the media throughput is considerably higher, results in optimized energy utilization and surprisingly short cycle times. However, the shot blast treatment remains very gentle. In short, despite the relatively low density of aluminum blast media, the shot blast process is highly effective and at the same time surprisingly gentle preventing any warping or distortions of delicate work pieces.

Another benefit of aluminum blast media is that it reduces the wear rate in the turbines and the machine to a fraction of the wear caused by steel shot, resulting in higher uptimes and lower operating costs.

Walther Trowal offers a range of different machine sizes equipped with up to four turbines. For example, for forged aluminum components the new THM 700/4/E with 4 turbines and a power of 15 kW for each turbine, produces an exceptionally high degree of productivity.

Specifically designed for handling aluminum media

To meet all the challenges posed by aluminum shot the Trowal engineers redesigned many machine assemblies, among them the media dosing system and the turbines. One detail of many: A rough surface of the throwing blades would quickly destroy the aluminum particles. Therefore, Walther Trowal is smoothing the blade surface with in-house vibratory finishing equipment. The result: A greatly reduced blast media consumption, lower dust emissions and significantly improved turbine uptimes.

Gentle work piece transport

THM troughed belt continuous shot blast machines are equally well suited for treating mass-produced bulk parts or large, delicate components. Especially with delicate, somewhat fragile work pieces the THM concept offers significant advantages: In these systems the work pieces are evenly distributed through the entire machine length. This results in a very gentle transport and prevents intensive part-on-part collisions. And the fact that the transport rods are covered with a relatively soft PU further cushions the already gentle tumbling action. This is particularly important for fragile components with thin walls, allowing them to be discharged from the machine without any nicking or other damage.

No problem with older THM systems!

When developing the new turbines Walther Trowal also took into consideration the many older machines still in operation: Any THM customer who wants to take advantage of the new turbines can easily install them in his existing machine(s). This allows the customers to increase the efficiency of their shot blast operation with minimal costs.
For THM systems still requiring steel or stainless steel blast media, Walther Trowal supplies the new turbines with the curved throwing blades made from tool steel also offering significantly higher turbine uptimes.

Fascinated by the distinct curative qualities of the healing mud, he let the peloid scientifically and medically investigate. Even the specialists were surprised by the capabilities of the brine silt. What makes the brine silt so special that it helps so well in psoriasis and other very different diseases? The exact mode of action of the silt is not completely investigated. But it is already clear, that the special composition makes the peloid truly unique. The silt is formed under the pink, rich in beta-carotene brine and is consequently itself rich in salt and beta-carotene. The components of the silt include magnesium, bromine and sulphur. Furthermore, the silt contains an organic amount. The professor Lukanov from Bulgaria proved, that the peloids with the organic amount preserve the healing effects of the plants, from which they originated. There are elements in the peloid from the lake Sivash, which are hormone- and cortisone-like. In the course of a clinical study, the scientists identified the biological activity of the healing silt, which manifests itself in the improvement of the liver condition and the detoxification of the body. In addition, they write that the peloid therapy has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic and immunmodulating effect.

Even if the bible bump is quickly removed with an operation, the rehabilitation period after surgery is quite long and painful. Besides, there is no guarantee that the ganglion will not return after the surgery. The naturopathic treatment of the ganglion cyst with Sivash-healing sea mud is a serious and gentle alternative. The healing sea mud comes ready-made from the nature in the form of a paste and does not have to be mixed with water. The healing paste is applied to the ganglion as well as the area around the bible bump about 2 mm thick or thicker.
The treated area shall be wrapped with a foil. To ensure that the film does not slip, it can be attached to the joint with a scarf or bandage.
The exposure time is at least 40 minutes. Some customers let the healing sea mud even over night on.
Remove the foil after the treatment. Most of the healing sea mud comes with the foil and the rest should be washed with water off. If the bone is treated in a place where it is not so comfortable with the washing, the healing sea mud remnants can also be removed with a spatula and a damp cloth.

The treatment should be carried out every day or every second day. The duration of treatment should at least be 15 applications.
The experience shows that the duration of the treatments can vary significantly. Some customers report success in just a few days, but most of them need several weeks or even months to reach the desired result.

Walther Trowal: New rotary drum coater for work pieces that are heavy or have complex geometries

At the Paint Expo Walther Trowal presents the new R 80 Rotamat drum coater.

At the Paint Expo Walther Trowal presents the new R80 Rotamat for coating of mass-produced small parts made from plastic, metal, rubber and wood.

With a drum diameter of 800 mm and a usable volume of 50 l the new machine can accommodate batches of 50 kg. This is of particular interest to customers, who must coat parts with complex geometries or heavy parts, which, for example are made from metal.

With technical features like optimized fresh air inlet and a modular filter system – up to filter class F6 – this machine offers a high degree of flexibility regarding the use of different paints with, at the same time, a higher throughput. By being able to use more solvent the users can speed up the coating process and still remain within the ATEX limits.

First reports from the field indicate that the new coater so far has not only fully met but exceeded expectations.

By optimizing the airflow and the paint spraying system, Walther Trowal was able to keep overspray at an absolute minimum. And finally, the new heat control system helps reduce cycle times and energy consumption.

Walther Trowal: The rotary drum coating technology conquers the market

More and more customers are choosing the rotary drum technology for coating their mass-produced small plastic and rubber components. Within just a few years the sales of the Walther Trowal Rotamat coating systems have increased several fold. At the DKT/IRC 2015 the company is introducing its redesigned Rotamat R80, which compared to its predecessor model offers not only a higher operational flexibility but also a higher capacity for coating of plastic components.

For several months now Walther Trowal has noticed a distinct trend towards the use of rotary drum coaters for the coating and painting of small mass-produced components. Many small-part manufacturers are switching from the drum coating at room temperature to the hot air drum coating technology. Other manufacturers are no longer subcontracting their coating work to external service companies but do it in-house with Rotamat systems. And some have replaced their single-piece paint systems with rotary hot air drum coaters.

With the drum coating method the small parts no longer have to be individually placed on special racks but can be loaded into the Rotamat drum in relatively large batch sizes. This technology is ideally suited for treating small parts made from different plastic materials like elastomers, ABS, PC or PS. Water based as well as solvent based paints can be processed.

Building on the success of the predecessor models Walther Trowal completely revamped the Rotamat range, and with the R80 is introducing a machine that can be even better adapted to the individual requirements of the users. The modular filtering system allows not only cleaning the exhaust air up to filter class F6, but it also allows spraying more solvent based paint, offering a higher part throughput without jeopardizing compliance with the prevailing clean air standards.

Frank Siegel, the sales manager for coating technology at Walther Trowal, explains, why the sales of Trowal coating systems are continuously increasing: „Since the Rotamat was introduced, we have sold nearly 300 units. The increased machine bookings we have seen during the past few months are mainly due to the fact that many small-part manufacturers are bringing their coating work back in-house to reduce their costs and, at the same time, improve their quality.“

Many new technical features!

The new Rotamat R80 from Walther Trowal has a drum diameter of 800 mm and can handle about 50 kg of parts with a batch volume of 50 liters. This batch size meets the requirements of many customers who must coat delicate, complex shaped parts or are processing relatively heavy parts like metal components. The new R80 is also available with a drum that offers a diameter of 700 mm and a usable part volume of 30 liters.

The airflow and the paint application system were optimized to a point where only a very small amount of overspray is created.

The inside of the coating drum is equipped with an explosion protected LED light allowing precise observation of the coating process, be it the paint layer buildup or color changes.

The new heating control system helps reduce cycle times and energy consumption. A PID controller adjusts the inlet air temperature in relation to the work piece temperature. At the same time it takes into consideration the actual air volume. The new controller reacts extremely quickly. This quick reaction and the better insulation of the drum allowed reducing the electrical energy requirements to 9 kW.

Air filtration

With the new exhaust air filter unit Walther Trowal managed to greatly enhance the possibility for using different paints. This is an important feature for those customers who must coat a large variety of parts with different types of paint. The R80 offers four independently usable stages for filtering the exhaust air so that the particle sizes caught by the filter system can vary within a relatively large range up to filter class F6.

The new filter unit also contributes to a higher part throughput: The user can now use more solvent, thus, speed up the coating process and still meet the standards for the maximum solvent concentration at the work place.

Another important feature of the new filtration system is the secondary air system that allows the connection to a thermal post combustion installation, which may be already available at the customers. The secondary air system limits the air volume pulled by the thermal post combustion installation so that the coating process is not affected.

The newly developed wheel rim hardening machines from Tenova LOI Thermprocess adapt flexibly to rolling stock wheels of different shapes and sizes, allowing operation without interruptions to production even if wheel sizes are frequently changed. In combination with a mathematical quenching model, the new machines significantly reduce the time required for tests and also ensure higher process security.

With the individually controlled nozzles, the wheel rim hardening machines are so flexible that they can be used for treating wheels of almost any dimensions. The new control system allows the cooling table program and the adjustment of the nozzles to be changed from batch to batch. This means that batch changes can be completed automatically without any interruption to production. Nevertheless, precise repeatability of the quenching and tempering processes is ensured for each specific batch.

The designers of the hardening tables were faced with the task of developing an extremely robust system without using any sensitive mechanisms. As a result, the new tables have significantly fewer parts than those previously used. The tables consist mainly of standard components available from stock, meaning that spare parts can be delivered quickly.

Especially for plants in countries with high ambient temperatures, it is important to note that the new tables use water temperature ranging from 30 to 35°C. It is no longer necessary to cool the water to 20°C.

Mathematical model saves time and enhances process security

The new hardening tables immediately proved themselves in practice on a recently installed fully-automated quenching and tempering line for railway rolling stock wheel rims. LOI used a mathematical model developed especially for hardening as well as a quenching program computer. Using this computer, quenching parameters are calculated to ensure that the wheels reach the specified values, even after product changes.

Using this model, LOI has reduced commissioning times from up to one year to a few weeks. The customer saves material and laboratory time and can also start production earlier.

Background

The furnace technology used in heat treatment plants has already reached a very high standard. In contrast, on many manual or semi-automatic treatment lines, the quality of quenching still depends on the qualification and experience of a few employees. The hardness required is normally reached but the microstructure does not always meet the requirements set out in standards. Especially for high-speed train wheels, it is crucially important for process parameters to be reproducible within very tight limits.

To date, the development of programs for new products and the running-in phase following product changes have been extremely time-consuming and have resulted in considerable material losses. Until wheels meet the required specifications, they must be destructively tested so that metallurgical parameters can be inspected over the cross-section of the wheel.

The model developed by LOI receives the specified properties of the finished wheel as inputs and calculates quenching parameters from the geometry of the wheel and the material composition. This procedure is independent of the various national standards which need to be applied.

Sales have tripled in the past three years

Simmerath, Germany, 21 October 2014 – Schwartz Wärmebehandungsanlagen GmbH is celebrating its 30th business anniversary this October. Based on the production of chamber, pit, box-type and shaker hearth furnaces, the company has evolved into a globally leading manufacturer of heat treatment equipment. More than 800 installed systems prove their merits in day-to-day use in the automotive and its supplier industries as well as in steel, aluminium and nonferrous metals processing.

Established in 1984 at Gevelsberg/Germany by Dipl.-Ing. Rolf Schwartz, the company relocated to Simmerath in 1998, setting up a plant on the Rollesbroich Industrial Estate. Today, the Simmerath headquarters site comprises around 3,000 sq.m. of floorspace for the manufacture, assembly and commissioning of heat treatment systems. For the planned addition of a further 1,000 sq.m. of indoor manufacturing space the contracts have already been awarded. There are currently 110 people employed at the Simmerath factory; the company has a total workforce of 150 employees worldwide.

In 2011, the manufacturing subsidiary Schwartz Heat Treatment Systems Asia (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. was founded in Shanghai, PR China. Another subsidiary, Schwartz Inc. of Oswego, Illinois (U.S.A.), has been active since 2012. Now as before, all equipment is designed, produced and commissioned at the Simmerath headquarters plant.

Schwartz develops and manufactures high-efficiency heat treatment systems. The range comprises, e.g.,
-roller-hearth heat treatment equipment for annealing, hardening, forging, sintering and tempering metals;
-continuous-type heat treatment equipment for hardening, forging and sintering strip under a protective gas atmosphere;
-jet-heating systems for forging and pressing blanks.

Over the years, Schwartz has come into the spotlight time and again for its innovative systems. One example is the technology of hot-forming sheet metal, which was pioneered by Schwartz, along with the associated environmental protection solutions. At one German automotive manufacturer, equipment supplied ex Simmerath saves huge amounts of CO2 each year – the cuts are equivalent to the emissions of a small city with a population of around 32,000.

Especially in the past five years, Schwartz has been expanding strongly. Alexander Wilden, the Managing Director, sees his strategy confirmed. „Our customers are evidently satisfied with our work. This is clearly reflected in the figures – in the last three years we have nearly tripled our sales. Certainly, one key aspect of our new system development is the intense cooperation with the two Aachen universities as well as with renowned industrial partners.“

The company places particular emphasis on energy efficiency. Due to their excellent design and the consistent use and recirculation of process heat, Schwartz systems are particularly low on energy consumption while providing high availability rates at the same time.

In late October, the company’s business anniversary will be celebrated at the Simmerath plant with customers from Germany and abroad, together with Schwartz employees. Among the guests will be Thomas Rachel (MP), Parliamentary Undersecretary in the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The program will be rounded out by tours of the company that will include viewings of heat treatment systems under construction as well as of ongoing development projects.

At Wire 2014, Wire Körner will exhibit the new series of directly heated patenting furnaces fitted with automatic furnace atmosphere control and burner with heat recuperation. With these new energy-saving furnaces, Wire Körner further expands its range of efficient and eco-friendly heat treatment plants for wire. Based on his good experience with the furnace, a German customer has already ordered an extension to the existing unit.

The first unit of this new furnace generation has been in operation for two years. Designed for a throughput of 2,000 t per hour, it processes wire in diameters from 1.5 to 5.5 mm. The plant expansion is expected to be commissioned in April 2014.

By implementing a wide array of innovative features, Wire Körner has increased the efficiency of patenting furnaces for wire and achieved savings on energy consumption of some eight to ten percent compared to conventional furnaces. The very first furnace of this new generation has already been in production for more than two years.

With an innovative sensor, Wire Körner has for the first time realized a system for controlling the furnace atmosphere. Via the furnace control system the air/combustion gas ratio is exactly set within a specified range. The high control precision and stability of the gas/air ratio makes the new furnaces superior to Pre Mix systems. In addition to the savings on energy, controlling the air/gas ratio keeps NOx emissions low and prevents decarburization of the wire. The furnace temperature is adjusted with a precision of +/- 2 °C.

A central recuperator installed in the waste gas duct preheats the combustion air for the high-speed burners to 200 – 250 °C, while reducing the waste gas temperature at the stack from 600 °C to 400 – 500 °C. Already in the preheating zone Wire Körner exploits the thermal energy of the waste gas to heat up the wire entering the furnace. This reduces the energy demand for preheating.

In contrast to previously used burners, the high-speed burners employed by Wire Körner can be adjusted in several steps. This ensures that the burners consume exactly the amount of energy they need, not more.
Wire Körner has brought down heat losses via the furnace wall by optimizing the layout of the wall, among others by means of insulating ceramic fibers. An additional coating ensures a long service life of the furnace wall even under conditions of high CO contents and high flow velocities. An additional, 2.5-cm-thick Microtherm® insulating layer behind the refractory brick lining brings down heat losses even further.

The furnace is directly heated. The heat is transferred into the wire by convection, at flow velocities of up to 120 m/s. This provides much better energy efficiency than heating by radiation.

DERMA EVE®: Donnie, you are a beauty coach and mentor at DERMA EVE®. How did this come about?
Donnie Villella: Since 1988 I have been working as a state-licensed cosmetologist in the United States. Unlike in Europe, in the States this is not only a recognized occupation that requires „hands on“ training, but also formal classroom instruction and a license. About ten years ago, I met Denise Sonja Engels through her husband and we got along very well right away. I told her about – in those days – current capabilities and methods of instrument-based cosmetics, especially in the area of IPL / flash light with excellent results. However, out of this discussion grew a joint business idea, which in January 2012 was founded with the Institute for Improved Skin Texture under our own and protected brand name DERMA EVE®.

DE®: Based out of Baltimore, Maryland you are more than 3.000 miles away from the scene of events. What precisely is your contribution within this joint business idea at the Institute for Improved Skin Texture?
Donnie: First and foremost I see my role as a driving force. It is not a secret that many actual trends find their way from the United States to Europe in the beauty & wellness market. To stay in step with the times and define a fitting target group, it is important to check and review the scope of individual services at DERMA EVE® regularly and adjust it accordingly to individual needs. In essence, portfolio management is my contribution, which can be conducted as a non-local resident through the use of state-of-the-art communication technology.

DE®: Can you predict any trends for the European market?
Donnie: Particularly here in America, there are many extremely young people who try to keep up a perceived ideal of beauty through cosmetic surgery. My personal opinion is that this is the wrong approach, as only a superficial cliché is served. Against this background, the unique concept of DERMA EVE® is compelling, in particular the basic principle of so called non or minimally invasive treatments.

DE®: Can you please clarify this last point for our readers?
Donnie: It is absolutely shocking when I read about very young girls at the age of 16 to 25 years who are seriously considering a cosmetic surgery treatment. There are many non or minimally invasive treatments available which can achieve the same desired result, without being irreversible. For example, take micro needling, which is a centuries old technique, which punctures the skin with micro needles, arranged on a drum shape instrument.

DE®: Please allow us the question, Donnie, why should anybody consider a treatment involving needling?
Donnie: Well, on the one hand, micro needling offers a wide range of applications as it helps reduce wrinkles, scars, pigmentation problems, cellulite, and generally poor connective tissue effectively. Furthermore, there is currently no better method existing to improve impure and course porous skin more efficient and less painful. With micro needling you can not only overcome the skin´s barrier of larger skin areas, but also improve the enhancement of active ingredients, mainly pharmaceuticals that can be far better absorbed and more evenly distributed in the metabolism when enhanced percutaneously, instead of systematically by tablets or injections.

DE®: Is this statement scientifically proven?
Donnie: So far, the U.S. Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the Universities of Marburg and Jena, both in Germany, wrote independent articles about the worth of transdermal drug delivery via Micro Needling.

DE®: In the era of AIDS and other infectious diseases, is this really a safe treatment?
Donnie: For the Micro Needling treatment at DERMA EVE® there are only one-time use, disposable needles used, with no infection risk from reuse. Moreover, since micro needles, regardless of their length, which penetrate the skin´s surface, a needling instrument must be registered and approved as a medical device according to U.S. and European regulation and must be CE marked before it is placed on the market.

DE®: Donnie, is there a realistic chance for your rapidly growing fan base to reach out to you in person?
Donnie: Yes, at this time I am living in Maryland, U.S. Based on the recent re-launch of DERMA EVE®, we are also working to make arrangements for me visit primarily as I welcome the opportunity to meet me on site at the Institute for Improved Skin Texture in Germany. At that time we can set the mood for the day…“An open day to discuss the individual needs of potential clientele, in conjunction with existing patrons with beauty coach Donnie“ . A tentative business/pleasure trip is in the works for 2013, I look forward to fostering this magnificent venture. I truely believe in the product. At the age of 50, I find that these products and procedures have afforded me the opportunity to look several years younger.
