How VR influences the booking behaviour of travellers

How VR influences the booking behaviour of travellers

In recent years, accelerating technological innovations and digitalization have been affecting the tourism industry more than ever before. New technological means can help targeting customers directly and individually. In addition, Carola Epple now explains how Virtual Reality can change the booking behaviour of prospective customers. Her book Virtual Reality Tools in the Tourism Industry and their Influence on Booking Behaviour has been released at GRIN Publishing in December 2018.

In light of fierce competition and fast changing markets, travel firms have to make reasonable use of new technologies in order to succeed. Virtual Reality (VR) enables travellers to experience a destination in advance. How exactly does VR exposure affect the booking decision process? Does it increase the purchasing probability? In contrast to other research on this topic, „Virtual Reality Tools in the Tourism Industry“ analyses actual purchasing decisions from the perspective of travel sales agents instead of customers“ purchasing intentions in artificial laboratory situations.

New technologies and their influence on consumer behaviour

The current technological development considerably affects the way how tourism destinations and touristic products are perceived and how booking decisions take place. With the increasing differentiation of communication technologies and marketing channels, it becomes more and more important how travel companies can optimally allocate their marketing budgets. In that context, it is crucial to understand consumer decision processes, especially in the travel and hospitality sector. „Virtual Reality Tools in the Tourism Industry“ investigates consumer behaviour based on a structural model. Carola Epple offers handy guidelines for travel marketers how to best use VR for their purposes and supports managerial practice by indicating how the relevant constructs can be stimulated.

Made in Taiwan: improved medical outcomes – MEDICA 2018

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council – TAITRA – presents an elite group of 15 companies at this year’s MEDICA.

Made in Taiwan: improved medical outcomes - MEDICA 2018

Taiwan is a country founded on technology and the relentless drive for innovation. It benefits from the ambitions of its individual researchers, their institutes and companies and from the engagement and support from the Taiwan External Trade Development Council – TAITRA. At this year“s MEDICA, TAITRA presents an elite group of 15 companies – the recipients of TAITRA’s Taiwan Excellence awards – displaying technology to improve efficiency, process and, ultimately, outcomes to the world“s doctors, caregivers, and patients.

The world’s population is aging and becoming more connected. This fact is of utmost importance to Taiwan; its commercial sectors are focused on issues associated with a citizenry maturing in-step with the West. Rehabotics Medical Technology Corporation has just brought an exceptional aid to the market, MirrorHand, which enables robot-assisted rehabilitation of the hands after a stroke. Weighing only 750 grams, it is by far the lightest robotic rehabilitation device for the hand. The mirrored motion transferred from healthy to compromised hand and the programmable passive motion rehabilitation functions support neuromuscular regeneration.

Some unique technologies are just as beneficial at either end of life. The Opro9 Smart Diaper from Civicloud is an example. By offering a diaper with networked moisture monitoring, this technology is an excellent low-cost, multifunctional device. Whether in a NICs unit where renal function monitoring is a key aspect to positive outcomes, to an assisted living center where the care must remain efficient but responsive and flexible, this simple system can alert staff to needs of each patient and ensure an exceptional quality of care while offering valuable data-points into the EHR.

The ability for doctors to reach rapid, accurate conclusions is key to diagnosis and continued evaluation. Leltek Inc. offers this through a best-in-class cordless ultrasound subsystem. Of particular interest is their system’s bring-your-own-device compatibility, its ultra-light design at only 330 grams, and the exceptional battery life of three hours – overcoming the issues associated with previous cordless ultrasound solutions.

Another company featured through Taiwan Excellence, AmCad, leverages existing ultrasound diagnostic equipment to achieve the most cost-effective sleep apnea (OSA) diagnosis. As the understanding of the denigrating effects this condition plays in the general population becomes established, AmCad’s UO system delivers standardized ultrasound-head positioning and output data analysis to achieve an accurate diagnosis within 10 minutes on a fully awake patient, thereby eliminating the need for expensive overnight evaluation.

These Taiwan Excellence recipients and others organized by TAITRA will be presented during the MEDICA in Dusseldorf, Germany, from November 12th through the 15th in hall 17 Stand A61. All are interested in realizing opportunities for technological cooperation and business development with the global medical community. Hosts are on-hand and individual tours are available to meet your goals.

Founded in 1970 to help promote foreign trade, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is the foremost non-profit trade promotion organization in Taiwan. Jointly sponsored by the government, industry associations, and several commercial organizations, TAITRA assists Taiwan businesses and manufacturers with reinforcing their international competitiveness and in coping with the challenges they face in foreign markets.

TAITRA boasts a well-coordinated trade promotion and information network of over 1,300 trained specialists stationed throughout its Taipei headquarters, four local branch offices in Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, and 60 overseas branch offices worldwide. Together with its sister organizations, Taiwan Trade Center (TTC) and Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC), TAITRA has created a wealth of trade opportunities through effective promotion strategies.

biolitec®: Risk patients benefit from laser channel technology for BPH

Laser channel technology with biolitec® lasers successfully applied to treat in high-risk patients in Japan – Gentle, safe, fast, few side effects – Excellent hemostasis with fast, residue-free ablation

biolitec®: Risk patients benefit from laser channel technology for BPH

Prostate treatment with biolitec® fiber TWISTER (Source: biolitec biomedical technology GmbH)

Jena, July 11th, 2018 – The minimally invasive laser treatment LIFE (Laser Induced Flow Enhancement) by medical laser pioneer biolitec biomedical technology GmbH with its channel technology is particularly well suited for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia in high-risk patients. This is due to the optimal wavelength of the biolitec® laser (980 nm and 1470 nm) and to the special properties of the TWISTER and XCAVATOR® laser fibers, also specially developed by biolitec®. These are currently one of the gentlest, safest and fastest laser treatments with the fewest side effects and are therefore particularly suitable for high-risk patients. The channel technology offers the possibility of removing the tissue of the urinary tract of the prostate from the inside in a targeted manner without leaving any residue.

The biolitec® laser was one of the first lasers on the market with a wavelength of 980 nm and 1470 nm. This wavelength offers the highest absorption in water and hemoglobin and consequently enables excellent hemostasis. Less bleeding during the procedure improves visibility in the surgical area.
The TWISTER and XCAVATOR® laser fibers stand out due to their enlarged contact area and a special coating on the fiber tip, which enables faster ablation and more precise fiber guidance. The biolitec® fibers also work in contact mode. This significantly reduces the coagulation zone (smaller than 1 mm) and the bladder and surrounding tissue are protected, incontinence and sexual dysfunction are usually avoided.

The LIFE method has proven itself among other things in the treatment of high-risk patients. Urologists at Harasanshin Hospital Fukuoka in Japan have helped to develop this special channel technique and have operated on 26 patients who either suffer from diabetes and/or need to take anticoagulants. In addition, all patients had large prostates (on average over 100 to 200 g).

Doctors at Harasanshin Hospital Fukuoka were able to operate much faster than with conventional procedures – one hour on average – and to reach a large cavity without having to remove the tissue completely. The side effects, such as swelling, dysuria or retention, which are particularly common in large glands, did not occur. In addition, the treating physicians were enthusiastic about the good manageability and quality of the biolitec® laser system.

Further information on biolitec® lasers and special fibers as well as the possibilities of participating in workshops for doctors can be found on the website www.biolitec.com. Interested patients can find out more about doctors who use the LIFE method at www.info-prostate.com.

About biolitec
biolitec® is one of the world“s leading medical technology companies in the field of laser applications and the only provider which possesses all the relevant core competences in the field of photodynamic therapy (PDT) – photosensitizers, lasers and fibre optic cables. Besides laser-supported treatment of cancers with the drug Foscan®, biolitec® researches and markets above all minimally invasive, gentle laser procedures.
ELVeS® Radial® (Endo Laser Vein System) is the world“s most-used laser system to treat venous insufficiency. The LEONARDO® diode laser from biolitec® is the first universally applicable medical laser which has a combination of two wavelengths, 980nm and 1470nm, and which can be used across disciplines. The innovative contact fibre XCAVATOR® in conjunction with the LEONARDO® DUAL 200 Watt laser allows in urology a gentle treatment of e.g. benign prostate enlargement (BPH). The light-weight LEONARDO® Mini laser weighing only 900 g was developed especially for mobile application on site. Gentle laser applications in the fields of proctology, ENT, gynecology, thorax surgery and pneumology are also part of biolitec®“s field of business. More information available at www.biolitec.com

Asahi Kasei Europe opens Exhibition Center in the European Headquarters in Düsseldorf

Asahi Kasei Europe opens Exhibition Center in the European Headquarters in Düsseldorf

New Exhibition Center at the Asahi Kasei European Headquarters in Düsseldorf (Source: @Asahi Kasei Europe GmbH)

Düsseldorf, January 9, 2018 – After the founding of Asahi Kasei Europe GmbH (April 2016) and the opening of the Asahi Kasei R&D Center in CHEMPARK Dormagen (October 2017), the company has built on its marketing and sales activities. The newly designed Asahi Kasei Europe Exhibition Center in Düsseldorf was completed at the start of December 2017. This exhibition space at the European Headquarters presents visitors with products and technologies for the automotive, medicine and health, renewable energies and lifestyle markets.

Exhibits, infographics, interactive touch panels and videos demonstrate the solutions from the Japanese technology group Asahi Kasei for the world of tomorrow. Asahi Kasei Europe presents the topics of „Automotive Solutions“, „Life Solutions“, „Health Care Solutions“, „Corporate“ and „Corporate Citizenship and Community Fellowship“, to the public.

Managing Director Hideki Tsutsumi said at the opening: „Asahi Kasei Europe is your innovation partner with leading technologies. At the Asahi Kasei Europe Exhibition Center we present our businesses, products and solutions. We will grow together with the European industry by providing value through collaboration and synergies.“

„Automotive Solutions“
Safety, comfort and eco-friendliness are the focus of automotive innovations; in the areas „Sensing System“, „Interior“, „Exterior“ as well as „Battery/Engine“, Asahi Kasei displays its broad portfolio for sustainable mobility. High-performance plastics with trademarks XyronTM, ThermyleneTM, LeonaTM and TenacTM allow for economical motors and lightweight components. 27 construction parts demonstrate tools and technologies from different Asahi Kasei areas of business in the concept vehicle developed jointly by Asahi Kasei and GLM Co. Ltd. called AKXY™ (Asahi Kasei X multiplied by You, the customer).

Videos take the visitor into the world of this fully roadworthy vehicle and explain engineering plastics, which make it possible to save weight by replacing metal parts, or suede leather made from environmentally friendly microfibres for elegant upholstery. The trademarks LamousTM/Dinamica® stand for surface qualities, which the visitor can feel: The cushions displayed convey a pleasant „touch and feel“.

The operating principle of a CO2 sensor, which monitors the inside of the vehicle, is explained by a „carbon dioxide tree“, on which the colours change after breathing on the sensors, with this measuring and displaying the CO2 content of the ambient air. On the subject of electromobility, Asahi Kasei demonstrates its technical expertise and leading position in this future market with the battery separator foils displayed. HiporeTM and CelgardTM for lithium-ion batteries as well as Darak® and Daramic® for lead-acid batteries are the trademarks for these essential components of high-performance batteries and accumulators.

„Life Solutions“
„Life Solutions“ are applications that enrich daily life and make it easier. This includes the efficient use of resources with innovative packaging solutions, which contribute to the reduction of food waste, as well as plastic sealing films for pharmaceutical packaging. Asahi Photoproducts, a recognised pioneer for innovative print technologies and sustainable packaging solutions that are in harmony with the environment, is also presenting 40 years of development work in the area of flexible printing plates.

Cotton-based fibres or plastic-based technical fibres for elegant clothing or sportswear are standing in the center of the room: Mannequins wear a suit and a dress using fibres from Asahi Kasei, where elegance meets leading know-how in the area of fibre technology. The trademark CuproTM stands for a biodegradable cotton fibre, which is produced in an environmentally friendly production process, in which all production waste is reused. ROICATM is a sustainable elastic technical fibre, which is applied primarily in functional and sports clothing.

As a leading company in the area of ion-exchange membranes and chlor-alkali electrolysis technology, Asahi Kasei has proven technologies, which can be used to create hydrogen out of surplus energy from renewable energy sources. Constant further development of this technology makes this company one of the leading companies in the field of energy storage and in the realisation of a hydrogen society. The showroom explains the details of this forward-looking project.

„Health Care Solutions“
Fibre technology from Asahi Kasei makes the life of sick people easier and contributes to greater quality of life, and so high-performance hollow fibre membranes for dialysis therapy or virus filters for biomedicine are at the center of the section Health Care Solutions. An impressive hollow fibre membrane exhibit allows the visitor to realise the technological level that Asahi Kasei is offering biomedicine.

The defibrillators displayed are also a matter of life and limb, which have already saved thousands of people and continue to do so daily. People with heart diseases can also carry this life-saving device on the body as a so-called „LifeVest®“. „Zoll Medical“, an Asahi Kasei group company rich in tradition , produces and sells these essential products for acute and emergency medicine.

„Corporate, Corporate Citizenship and Community Fellowship“
Asahi Kasei was founded almost 100 years ago and since then has produced a consistent story of success. Milestones on this path as well as an overview of the European sites can be viewed in the Corporate area. The good and trusting relations with the city of Düsseldorf are also prominently displayed, which includes support for „Sportstadt Düsseldorf“ (Düsseldorf – Sports City); Asahi Kasei actively promotes football and judo.

The Asahi Kasei Exhibition Center is open now for customers, journalists and other interested members of the public. Opening times and appointments can be requested from Sebastian Schmidt by telephone +49 (0)211 280 68 139 or e-mail: Sebastian.Schmidt@asahi-kasei.eu.

SKIDATA Innovathon: exploring digital trends

Employees and students develop new solutions for IT & SKIDATA technology

SKIDATA Innovathon: exploring digital trends

SKIDATA Innovathon: exploring digital trends

It´s that time again – namely, for the next round of the SKIDATA Innovathon. Experienced specialists, creative outside-the-box thinkers and inspiring newcomers will develop practical applications for SKIDATA´s digital future as part of the third SKIDATA Innovathon taking place from November 8-10, 2017. Anything goes at this event – anything except conventional ideas, that is. From big data to virtual reality or artificial intelligence: removed from everyday work, more than ten international teams from all divisions will work on fresh, new concepts. Because together we create the best ideas.

„At SKIDATA, we have employees with many creative ideas and a strong pioneering spirit. With the Innovathon, we want to give them the chance to develop and utilize this power of innovation in an inspiring think tank atmosphere and in interdisciplinary teams“, explains Wolfgang Titze, Head of Software Development in Salzburg and co-organizer of the SKIDATA Innovathon. In addition to being a think tank for the company, however, this event has a social component which is also very valuable. Working together on an idea for days unites us.

Innovation is a result of professional teamwork

This is the third time the Innovathon has taken place and it has already established itself as an internal forum for innovation. Each year the number of participants has grown. Participants all have a knack for technology and plenty of unconventional ideas in their mind, and work in teams of three or four. With an open mind and enthusiasm for new things, they develop exciting concepts that no one has thought of before, making the teams grow closer together. „The best part of the Innovathon is that it harnesses the impressive knowledge and inventive spirit of SKIDATA team members to bring ideas to life and help shape the future of the company“, says Jeff, participant from the USA at this year´s SKIDATA Innovathon.

Research & development: inventiveness at SKIDATA

At SKIDATA, innovation is practically in our blood. Günther Walcher started the operative business in 1977 with the first printed ski ticket. What began as an idea 40 years ago has since developed into an internationally successful digital solution provider in access and visitor management. Still today, it is our employees´ pioneering spirit that drives the development of our IT business solutions forward. The result? SKIDATA has more than 100 patent families that have been developed and filed by the approximately 60 inventors in the SKIDATA team. Continuous research and development, a good work atmosphere that creates freedom for innovation and events such as the SKIDATA Innovathon make it possible. Our employees´ power of innovation is central to SKIDATA and new patent ideas are awarded once a year as part of a recognition event by the Executive Board.

“Smart Summer” with SKIDATA

Young men and women aged 12 to 16 can take a peek at Salzburg´s most successful IT companies – including SKIDATA, the global market leader for access solutions – during the „Smart Summer“ technology and IT summer vacation weeks taking place from July 17 to August 4, 2017. On July 20, 2017, SKIDATA invites enthusiastic IT up-and-comers to their headquarters in Grödig, Austria. With the intention of awakening curiosity and excitement for technical professions, young people have the opportunity to learn more about the company and get involved themselves.

„Program participants can look forward to taking apart a computer and putting it back together, getting a closer look into the world of software development and much more. They should see how exciting technical jobs are and that math is important in more places than just the classroom,“ says Barbara Köglhaider, SKIDATA Recruiting Specialist. Responsible for junior staff development at SKIDATA, she and her colleagues are eagerly looking forward to the event on July 20, 2017.

Hands-on IT, technology and software at SKIDATA

SKIDATA will show students the variety in IT jobs in order to get them excited about a technology, software or IT apprenticeship or internship. After a snack in the cafeteria, they are treated to a company tour with a first glimpse at the world of SKIDATA ticketing systems and access solutions. Then, the rookies take part in workshops in which they learn about various job descriptions and training opportunities at SKIDATA. Students experience first-hand how exciting training in an IT profession can be. „What does a software developer do? How is a computer built? The participants get answers to their questions and we really hope that this hands-on event inspires them to choose career training in technology,“ explains Köglhaider.
