Do it yourself! The content management system ST4 2018 makes light work of automation in technical writing

Through two key innovations, Nuremberg-based software company SCHEMA is seeking to revolutionise the creation of automated workflows in technical writing with the 2018 version of its component content management system

Do it yourself! The content management system ST4 2018 makes light work of automation in technical writing

The new Workflow Designer enables internal processes to be reproduced easily and pre-defined process steps from the new Workflow Automation Library can be conveniently added to these processes. ST4 2018 will be demonstrated at this year’s annual tcworld conference and fair from 24th to 26th October in Stuttgart.

The more complex a product, the more international the clientele and the stricter the legal requirements, the more challenging the creation of accompanying product information. To meet these requirements, a number of checks are required that in some cases must also be documented. As demands like these have a tendency to increase, modern technical writing departments are calling for more automation.

Up to now, automated procedures have either been programmed laboriously in-house or the programming has been commissioned as a one-off order. However, if the requirements on the workflows and processes in question change, these existing workflows then need to be reprogrammed – which is another laborious task. This is precisely why SCHEMA has developed ST4 2018 to give technical writers the tools they need to flexibly implement new requirements into existing automated procedures.

Thanks to the innovations in ST4 2018, technical writers can now create workflows themselves. These are initiated automatically and subsequently follow the pre-defined process steps without deviation. This means that once a document has been translated, production can be started automatically, or an email can be automatically sent to the head of department when a task has been completed.

It is very easy for technical writers to get to grips with creating automated workflows using the Workflow Designer and the Workflow Automation Library. The workflows are created in the form of process flowcharts and are automated in just a few clicks using the automated procedures in the Workflow Automation Library. Virtually all areas of the content management system can be accessed, triggered or changed.

At SCHEMA, automation continues to be a strategically important issue. Following the major innovation of the project configurator in ST4 2017, which automatically creates publications from intelligent content modules, two essential functions for automating authoring processes are now being introduced: the Workflow Designer and the Workflow Automation Library. These will enable companies to react quickly and flexibly to changes in requirements so that technical writers can focus on the essentials again: creating high-quality content.

Content delivery, automation and a touch of Obi-Wan in technical writing and documentation – the SCHEMA Conference 2017

Technical writing and technical documentation were the focal points of the conference, held once again in Nuremberg on 9th and 10th May 2017

Content delivery, automation and a touch of Obi-Wan in technical writing and documentation - the SCHEMA Conference 2017

The SCHEMA Group, a provider of high-performance component content management solutions, opened its doors to the annual SCHEMA Conference, this year held for the first time in the Mitte Convention Center at MesseNürnberg. More than 500 delegates from 14 countries attended the conference to learn about the latest developments in technical documentation. Representatives from a number of certified partners from the SCHEMA partner network were also present, who, together with the „best-of-breed“ manufacturer, develop solutions for consultancy, translation and implementation, to provide the best possible response to specific customer requirements. Amongst this year’s guests were partners A2 documentation, acrolinx, across, C+P, congree, doctima, Dokuwerk, ep Technische Dokumentation, ICMS, Imprimatur, Kaleidoscope, nlg, Schmeling + Consultants, T3, TID Informatik, Transline, urban translation services, text & form and Dr. Rieland Technische Dokumentation.

In a number of workshops and lectures, speakers from the SCHEMA Group gave a detailed presentation of the latest 2017 release of SCHEMA ST4 – the proprietary and now globally used component content management system for a modular approach to technical writing. This year’s focus was on content delivery in the context of Industry 4.0 and thus on the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server, known as SCHEMA CDS, a solution also developed at the company’s Nuremberg site for the B2B sector. SCHEMA CDS is one of the few content delivery platforms that is currently available on the market as comprehensive standard software. At a packed podium discussion, a panel of experts comprising users, developers, researchers and associations principally discussed the implementation and further development of these new platforms, as well as questions on recoverability. Improved cooperation and optimised workflows were other issues covered this year, which generated huge interest amongst delegates. As well as the announced expansion of the automation workflow in SCHEMA ST4, reports of customer experiences in this regard were presented to the entire audience. SSI Schäfer, an Austrian intralogistics provider, talked about successful cooperation with SCHEMA ST4 as a standard platform for company-wide documentation and communication – with more than two hundred users and three technical writers. SEW Eurodrive also reported successful compliance with exacting standards using SCHEMA ST4. Representing the healthcare sector, Philips Medical Systems talked about the creation and presentation of novel analytics applications for service technicians with SCHEMA.

With 47 partners and speakers and some 40 workshops and presentations, over the two days of the conference, users still had plenty of opportunities to learn about partner solutions and individual features in SCHEMA ST4 and SCHEMA CDS in greater detail. With a slight modification to an Obi-Wan quote from the Star Wars epic, one speaker from SCHEMA Development showed how data analysis and evaluation can be successful. The British SCHEMA partner, Imprimatur Limited, talked about the key role of the SCHEMA Online Media Designer (OMD) in drafting the owner’s manual for the new Bentley Continental GT.

The SCHEMA Group presented a workflow-optimised 2-in-1 principle geared to user requirements in the form of the new Catalog Content Integration, which brings together functionalities from the TID, SCHEMA ST4 and SCHEMA CDS content creator to ensure optimum interaction between the spare parts catalogue and operation-, maintenance- and service manuals.

Amongst visitors from international companies, there was particular demand for presentations and proposals in the area of translation management. Specialised partners and SCHEMA experts explained how systems can be used to optimise translation management and how the COTI standard interface supports the connection between the content management system and the translation memory system (TMS). This project launched under the leadership of DERCOM (Association of German Manufacturers of Authoring and Content Management Systems) was a topic of interest in discussions, as was the iiRDS (Intelligent Information Request and Delivery Standard), the data provision standard currently promoted by tekom (European Association for Technical Communication).

As in previous years, newcomers and interested parties had the opportunity on day two to take time out from the experts‘ presentations and discussions in the SCHEMA CMS Camp to find out about the functionalities and operation of a modern day content management system.

As a welcome break after the first day of the conference, delegates were invited to an evening event at Nuremberg’s traditional restaurant, Bratwurst Röslein, in the heart of the Old Town. Then on day two, the Partner Prize Draw, now firmly established in the conference programme, provided a further interlude.

Save the date: the next SCHEMA Conference will be held on 19th and 20th June 2018 in the Mitte Convention Center at MesseNürnberg.

The year 2016 has been a year of superlatives for the SCHEMA Group – awards won, strong sales and a position as an attractive employer

Record turnover, record employee numbers and a new customer record confirm the company’s positive development.

The year 2016 has been a year of superlatives for the SCHEMA Group - awards won, strong sales and a position as an attractive employer

Over 40 new customers from a wide range of sectors have opted for the Component Content Management System (CCMS) SCHEMA ST4 in 2016, including BSH, Biotronik, Bosch Power Tools, CFL Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (Luxembourg National Rail) and AOK Systems. „We are delighted by the variety of sectors that are now using our software. More than 500 delegates from 21 countries attended this year’s SCHEMA Conference at the NürnbergMesse exhibition centre. This high degree of acceptance reaffirms that we are on the right track.“ Not only is Marcus Kessler convinced of this, but so too is Stefan Freisler, one of the founders and managing directors of the SCHEMA Group.

The attractiveness of the SCHEMA Group, which set a new turnover record in the 2016 financial year, can be seen in the continually rising employee figures. Approximately 120 people are currently employed by SCHEMA, the vast majority of which are involved in development. Today, SCHEMA ST4 and the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server number among the most widely used systems for a modular approach to technical writing and documentation. At the start of the year SCHEMA acquired an interest in TID Informatik GmbH, the developer of the standard software CATALOGcreator® and one of the leading suppliers of electronic spare parts catalogues and service information systems in Europe.

This thoroughly successful company development was awarded the „Bayerischer Gründerpreis 2016“ – a prize honouring the outstanding successes achieved by newly established companies in Bavaria – in the „Rising Star“ category.

The sum of the success is not least due to the continual development of the SCHEMA system solutions; a process that is always closely oriented towards market needs. With the release of SCHEMA ST4 2017, the developer is continuing along the path of automation and usability. Keywords such as Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things and Smart Factory find their counterparts in the features and functionalities of SCHEMA ST4, which increasingly rely on automated processes within the documentation workflow. This includes automated translation workflows that will greatly simplify the transfer between SCHEMA ST4 and Translation Management Systems (TMS) in the future.

SCHEMA: The second wave of automation

The ST4 2017 editing system compiles information on the basis of attributes

SCHEMA: The second wave of automation

SCHEMA, the XML-based editing system producer based in Nuremberg, is opening up new possibilities in automated content management with version 2017 of its SCHEMA ST4 editing system. The project configurator is a central innovative tool that makes it possible for editors of technical documents to compile information modules into publications automatically, based on the attributes of those modules themselves. ST4 2017 will be officially presented at the most important event in the industry in Germany – the tekom annual conference, which is set to take place between 8 and 10 November in Stuttgart.

The project configurator offers an alternative to first-generation content management. With first-generation content management, technical editors had to compile all of the information modules required for a publication (e.g. operating instructions for a machine) by hand, a working method which is definitely reaching its limits in modern-day editing processes. The more product variants are available, the more difficult it becomes for editors to maintain an overview of them and find the relevant information modules quickly.

With the project configurator, SCHEMA ST4 now offers a facility to assign the task of compilation to the editing system. In order for this to work, the modules themselves must be „intelligent“. Figuratively speaking, this means that they must „know“ what they contain and in what contexts they would be the correct choice. The mechanisms for this type of intelligent information have already been available in SCHEMA ST4 for several years. Each information module can save any number of attributes as metadata and therefore contains relevant key-words that clearly state its content.
The project configurator then makes use of this metadata. Instead of stipulating a fixed quantity of information modules, it works with placeholders. The placeholders are conditioned to a specific combination of attributes and can be filled dynamically with suitable modules. And this is how the publication structure and modules become self-selecting.

As far as the editors themselves are concerned, the project configurator in SCHEMA ST4 is a standard feature that can be operated with ease. In standard, clear management dialogues, they can see at a glance which information modules the editing system has compiled. What is more, they can also set up new modules with a single click if they detect gaps in the data inventory.

With the launch of the project configurator, SCHEMA is continuing its strategy of enabling document compilation processes to be carried out automatically. Together with the numerous integration interfaces (e.g. the ST4 Automated Publishing Extension module) and information distribution technologies, (SCHEMA Content Delivery Server), companies are able to utilise scenarios, which, once the system has been implemented in full, will make it possible to carry out the full range of publication processes in a fully automated way. In that way, companies will also be equipped to respond to the high demands being placed in the context of Industry 4.0 with regard to the flexible provision of information.

With 330 international guests the SCHEMA User Conference was a big success

This year for the first time SCHEMA GmbH, the Nuremberg-based producer of an XML editing system held its SCHEMA User Conference in the NCC West, the Nuremberg Convention Center. More than 330 international guests were welcomed by the specialist for technical documentation.

On May 21 and 22 the annual SCHEMA User Conference took place in the NCC West, the Nuremberg Convention Center. Specifically this means that more than 330 participants 10 partners with individual trade show booths had the chance to listen to a total of 21 hours of presentations and workshop program of which 9 were also translated simultaneously. The evening event in the Loftwerk offered opportunities for individual discussions.

Due to the positive feedback the producer of the XML editing system is very satisfied with its annual event. „We have close customer relationships – which is an important component to our success“, states Stefan Freisler, CEO of SCHEMA. The participants share this opinion: „It would have been good to have had even more time to delve into the individual topics“, is one visitor’s feedback at the end of the SCHEMA event. „But even three days would eventually become too short. SCHEMA ST4 is incredibly versatile.“

Marcus Kessseler, CEO of SCHEMA is committed to the two-day concept of the User Conference: „The first day should give an insight into the new developments of our editing system SCHEMA ST4 and thereby identify paths for the future: We introduced our Content Delivery Server and showed actual use cases in our workshops in the afternoon. Ten of our partners presented their companies and solutions in a special exhibition area and answered our customers‘ questions. We used the Loftwerk for an exchange of views while at the same time enjoying a culinary treat. The second day of the SUC focused on presentations by actual users, forums for discussion and research. For us this meant two days of many interesting impressions which also provided us with a lot of new ideas to think about!“

Stefan Freisler adds „We particularly thank our presenters who essentially contribute to our SCHEMA User Conference each year and our partners who also supported our concept of the ’special exhibition‘: Acrolinx GmbH, Across Systems GmbH, Adobe Systems GmbH, Dokuwerk KG, Doctima GmbH, HEITEC AG, Institut für technische Literatur AG, RWS Group Deutschland GmbH, T3 GmbH and TID Informatik GmbH.

SCHEMA Closes Fiscal Year 2013 at a Record High

unbenannt

The SCHEMA Group, XML-editing system producer from Nuremberg is able to announce new records for the fiscal year 2013.

With the highest turnover in the company“s history, the highest number of new customers in one fiscal year and the highest number of staff since SCHEMA“s foundation, the producer of the Content Management System SCHEMA ST4 is looking back on an extremely successful year.

In the fiscal year 2013, 47 new customers choose SCHEMA ST4, more than ever before. „In the last year we put a lot of effort in new developments in order to turn SCHEMA ST4 into an even better and more attractive product for our existing and new customers. I am very pleased that the new features of version „SCHEMA ST4 2014″ have been received so well“, says Marcus Kesseler the CEO responsible within the SCHEMA group for the development of ST4.

There is an astonishing variety of customers that decided on ST4. A traditional stronghold of SCHEMA is medical technology, where the producer of an XML editing system was able to gain new renowned customers like e.g. Hamilton Medical AG, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Varian Medical Systems Deutschland GmbH or the Tecan Group. Important customers from classic mechanical and plant engineering like e.g. ALD Vacuum Technologies GmbH, Mayer Maschinenbaugesellschaft mbH für innovative Fütterungstechnik (Siloking), BANSS Schlacht- und Fördertechnik GmbH or Beckhoff Automation GmbH could also be added to the list.

With the user interface of SCHEMA ST4 now completely available in Japanese four new customers could be gained in Japan. Here Toyota Industries Corporation is certainly the most noticeable. In Sweden several departments of Atlas Copco one of the largest Swedish and at the same time internationally operating companies could be gained.
„We are demanding high standards of our product and ourselves. In order to keep up our much-praised service with the quality expected by our customers and without reducing the rate of innovations, it is mandatory that SCHEMA is growing along with the number of its customers. By now the SCHEMA group has about 100 employees, an increase of around 15%“, reports Stefan Freisler, SCHEMA CEO, not without pride.

The newly founded SCHEMA Systems GmbH has also had a successful start in 2013. Several customers at once made use of the SCHEMA group’s extended service offer. The scope of services ranges from the installation of SCHEMA ST4 via the application management, i.e. the operation of SCHEMA ST4 as a component of the customer’s IT environment to Full Service Hosting and Providing where the complete IT infrastructure for the operation of ST4 is outsourced to SCHEMA Systems.

SCHEMA can look back positively on the past fiscal year and regarding the order books, which are even fuller than at the beginning of 2013, be more than optimistic for 2014.

SCHEMA Reacts to Development Towards Mobility with the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server and the SCHEMA Reader App

SCHEMA Reacts to Development Towards Mobility with the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server and the SCHEMA Reader App

unbenannt

For the tekom Annual Conference 2013 in Wiesbaden SCHEMA will focus on mobility. The new mobile features in the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server are especially suited for tablets and smart phones.

In addition to a newly developed SCHEMA Reader App there are now also mobile ST4 clients and online help in the Microsoft Help Viewer 2.x format which will support the users in their work away from their office. Also the responsive HTML5 based publication in the DocuManager for web-enabled and mobile devices makes working ‚on the road‘ much easier.

This year at the tekom Annual Conference in Wiesbaden from November 6 to 8, 2013 SCHEMA will present its new mobile features in the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server (CDS). The aim of the CDS by SCHEMA is the dedicated distribution of documents and information. It is an „intelligent“ webserver with various target systems: online, offline, tablet and smart phone. The Content Delivery Server is applicable for HTML and common documents like PDF, Word and the like. It is also suitable for online help systems as well as for service portals. In addition a connection between descriptive documentation and external systems can be created, like e.g. spare parts catalog systems or intranet portals.

An important component of the SCHEMA Content Delivery Server is the SCHEMA Reader App which is appropriate for tablets and smart phones. It operates on the Android, IOS and Windows 8 operating systems and is a web application for displaying content of documentation. Navigation via a primary hierarchy and taxonomies is optionally possible and also the personalized, graphical user interface can be controlled via role assignment.

Additionally an HTML5 based publication for web-enabled and mobile devices in Responsive Design as output format for the SCHEMA ST4 DocuManager has been developed. Through the Responsive Design of the HTML5 publication intelligent embedding on all mobile devices is possible. The SCHEMA CDS runs completely independently of the editing system’s server and is also open to content from other data sources.

Further details on the topic Mobility with SCHEMA will be presented by the Nuremberg XML editing system producer during the tekom Annual Conference in the Rhein-Main-Hallen in Wiesbaden at the SCHEMA booth number 123 in hall 1. For personal talks at the SCHEMA booth please contact claudia.arold@schema.de to arrange a date. For our regular customers we have prepared a special service: presentations of the updates in our „trade show cinema“. Besides HEITEC AG will give a demonstration on the ST4 ValiManager, the application module for validation documentation at the trade show booth every day.

Future Graduates Enthusiastic about SCHEMA ST4

Future Graduates Enthusiastic about SCHEMA ST4

unbenannt

From August 7 to 9, 2013 the first SCHEMA Graduate Academy took place in the new training center of SCHEMA. Ten future technical writers and editors from all over Germany had been invited to the Nuremberg producer of the XML editing system SCHEMA ST4.

In addition to a crash course in ST4 concluded by a certificate to be added to the application documents the participants had the opportunity to gain insight into the practical workings of the company.
After three days of intensive training the concluding statement is clear. „It was obvious how proficiently the participants used SCHEMA ST4. A large part had already worked with our editing system at their respective university. Therefore the work pace was rather high and we accomplished a lot!“ reports Dieter Pichl, trainer at SCHEMA, very contentedly. At the end of the workshop around SCHEMA ST4 the participants received a certificate for their application documents. „To offer students the possibility to „see the bigger picture“ was very important to us“, explains Marcus Kesseler, CEO of SCHEMA. „The universities are certainly very good at teaching theoretical knowledge but a view of the practical side is crucial for graduates. At least they will have to apply for jobs soon.“
In addition to the ST4 workshop, information around the PageLayout Designer of SCHEMA and educational practical examples the participants of the Graduate Academy enjoyed an all-inclusive leisure program. Aside from the „intellectual stimulation“ culture and cooling was offered for the heated heads at 8° C in the „Felsengänge“ – the historic rock-cut cellars below the Nuremberg castle. The go-kart track called for competitive ambition and Franconian cooking provided culinary variety.
„We are pleased that SCHEMA ST4 is a prevalent teaching system at the universities and we were able to discuss our editing system openly and constructively. On the other hand our „protégés“ received a certificate for the attended workshop in SCHEMA ST4 to be added to their application documents and could get a taste of a medium-size company. So both sides profited from these three days together. We will offer another SCHEMA Graduate Academy next year“, says Stefan Freisler, CEO of SCHEMA, convincedly. „And are looking forward to the participants of the SCHEMA Graduate Academy in the coming year!“
