VCOM: systematically uncovering yield losses
About 45,000 PV systems around the globe with a total power output of more than 13 GWp are currently being monitored in the VCOM portal. meteocontrol is writing a new chapter in this success story by introducing a wide range of upgrades. The performance ratio and system availability can be parameterized so that operation managers can easily display contractually regulated formulas. As a way of quickly identifying small yield losses, meteocontrol has developed the actual/rated performance graphic and a heat map for string currents. Fully automated reporting has been made even simpler as well: Clearly structured portfolio reports comprehensively inform investors and stakeholders about the performance of their systems and portfolios. meteocontrol“s newly developed VCOM monitoring app for visualizations on mobile and devices also now includes solar power forecasts and performance values.

blue“Log X series: making the quality of measurement data transparent
With its major release for 2018, meteocontrol has made the blue“Log X series that has proved itself for three years more innovative and future-proof – while maintaining its high quality, performance and IT security. New functionalities provide a high level of transparency for measurement data and communications, including minute values and the recording of the communication quality between blue“Log and inverters, sensors and meters. Alarm management now includes parameters like sunrise and sunset in addition to offering efficient filter functions. „We also focused our enhancement efforts on smooth maintenance,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „This includes a lean firmware update, the simple add-on installation of driver packages, SD card replacement in case of a device defect and a configuration backup. And our individualized license model will ensure more cost efficiency.“

Plant control: blue“Log X-Control with integrated VPN client
With the X-Control – the heart of meteocontrol“s park controller – meteocontrol has developed an intelligent, ground-breaking solution. The new transparent controller core makes it possible to include the control functions in network simulation models. The X-Control also ensures that the continuously rising demands of energy providers can be met. Other enhancements assist solar trader activities that have proved effective in Germany for three years now: The integrated VPN client automatically establishes a connection to the solar trader in the blue“Log, without using an additional VPN router. Setup and the function test can be done much faster and easier. „With the help of X-Control, operators are prepared in the best-possible way for the European revision of the network codes and related changes to Germany“s medium- and high-voltage directives,“ Schneider said. „They can also work efficiently and cost effectively.“

Alarm management 2.0: heading into the future with data analytics
To further improve monitoring in the VCOM portal, meteocontrol plans to add an assistant to VCOM in the next step. Augsburg/Chicago, April 19, 2018 – meteocontrol North America, a subsidiary of meteocontrol GmbH in Germany, and viasys Intelligent Video GmbH are set to revolutionize solar monitoring in the United States PV market by entering into a long-term partnership. The aim of the collaboration is to offer PV-system operators a turn-key monitoring solution at a great value and provide North American customers with professional technical support.

Consolidating the systems will result in cost savings for customers because video surveillance can be integrated into meteocontrol“s monitoring portal without the need for any additional infrastructure in solar farms, since the systems can share the same network components, cabling and control cabinet.

Interlocking the viasys and meteocontrol systems will simplify the technical operation management of solar parks and make them even more secure. When the viasys security system is integrated into an operation manager“s portal view, for example, they will be able to see what is happening near the system at any time and track it with precision all the way up to the access control. The meteocontrol monitoring portal signals the operating status in the status message and provides information as to whether the security system is active.

„There are also other developments in the pipeline,“ adds Moran. „The operation manager should be able to receive the alarm messages directly in the ticket system, log them there and create the report for the investor. The messages will no longer need to be processed separately from monitoring in the security control room. Augsburg, November 07, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH has won a strong partner in the shape of Kon-Tek Otomasyon AS, one of Turkey’s leading O&M service providers: Kon-Tek wants to control and monitor its entire portfolio of existing PV systems and all new systems using the meteocontrol monitoring system. meteocontrol has already equipped four new solar parks and the first existing systems with its monitoring components. All the systems will be monitored via the central platform VCOM (virtual control room).

The Turkish PV market has reached its peak value to date in 2017 with newly installed capacity of around 1 GWp. Ever greater solar portfolios require professional monitoring. O&M service providers such as the Kon-Tek Energy Department face the challenge of consistently and efficiently implementing monitoring for their constantly growing system portfolio. This calls for an independent monitoring system that is flexible in terms of the integrated components and brings together both existing and new systems in one platform.

Well positioned with monitoring from meteocontrol
Kon-Tek wants to be ideally equipped for the future with a uniform monitoring system. The PV service provider is focusing on growth: By the end of 2017, the portfolio should cover around 100 MWp installed capacity, with the target of doubling that amount in 2018. To monitor all the systems efficiently and securely, Kon-Tek is retrofitting the entire portfolio of existing systems to the monitoring solution from meteocontrol and also installing the hardware and software of the market leader for independent monitoring systems into new systems. meteocontrol has equipped four solar parks, each with a capacity of between 4 and 5 MWp, with data loggers from the blue’Log X series, set up the systems in the VCOM monitoring portal, and put them into operation. „We have experience in the Turkish market and offer special packages for unlicensed and licensed projects, in other words, systems greater than 1 MWp,“ explains Martin Schneider, Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The flexibility of our data loggers and the VCOM software with its analysis options are hugely important specifically for operation management providers like Kon-Tek. Simple upgrading of existing systems
meteocontrol has upgraded the first existing Kon-Tek systems with a capacity of 12 MWp to the uniform monitoring system. Where necessary, new hardware is also installed, but, for the most part, the upgrade is carried out simply and quickly by importing the system data. „The professional monitoring system offers security, since the contingency risk is noticeably reduced as a result, and yields rise. That convinces investors, especially those who already know the system and appreciate the added value,“ says Martin Schneider.

Augsburg/Leini, 07/13/2017 – The monitoring systems made by meteocontrol GmbH have just achieved their next success: The Italian company TGE S.r.l. is now using the VCOM monitoring portal to control its 102 photovoltaic systems. The O&M provider also plans to integrate other existing systems into the latest portal solution and to equip new systems with meteocontrol hardware and software for its customers.

TGE currently manages 102 photovoltaic systems with an installed output of about 17,000 kWp under an O&M agreement. To create the most efficient monitoring system possible, the technical operational manager decided to combine all of the solar systems in the VCOM monitoring portal. „Thanks to our long working relationship with meteocontrol, our choice was obvious: We would switch from the previous system to the latest portal solution offered by meteocontrol,“ said Davide Forastiere, the Technical Director of TGE. Regardless of their size, components or monitoring systems, solar systems can be integrated with VCOM“s help. Because of this, TGE is planning to add 15 other existing systems to the platform. „The uniform monitoring solution enables us to monitor the entire system portfolio at once and integrate existing or new systems into the portal,“ Davide Forastiere said. „The operation management is now much more efficient, and we get the maximum energy yield for our customers.“

Augsburg/Parma, 07/11/2017 – Stern Energy S.p.a has reached a decision: The Italian O&M operator of photovoltaic systems will further rely on the monitoring platform of Germany-based meteocontrol GmbH to run operations on its portfolio. 25 MWp of the overall 195 MWp installed power that Stern Energy monitors and operates in Italy are already integrated in VCOM (virtual control room) and therefore can be monitored and controlled by means of the central platform. Stern Energy receives direct, on-site support in the Italian language by meteocontrol Italia S.r.l.

„We want to provide our customers with optimal systems performance and maximum returns, while working effectively and cost-efficiently,“ explains Stefan Torri, CEO of Stern Energy. „That is why we decided to place all the solar parks onto one monitoring platform. The first 25 MWp have already been integrated in the VCOM central monitoring portal and another almost 30 MWp are currently in the project pipeline.“

With the modular structure of its monitoring solution, meteocontrol offers the best conditions for the implementation thereof. The aim of the partnership is to equip all of the solar parks operated by the solar-energy company with a uniform monitoring system and to facilitate electricity feed-in. meteocontrol will integrate the existing PV systems into the manufacture-independent monitoring platform VCOM. For its new systems, Arkolia Energies plans to use the complete monitoring solution offered by meteocontrol, including hardware components. meteocontrol also developed the necessary interface with Enedis, a French grid operator, for this purpose.

Arkolia Energies has a solar portfolio of about 150 MWp of installed power. More than 400 MWp is currently in the development phase as well. To ensure that the solar systems can be efficiently and securely monitored, the company decided to work with meteocontrol. The flexibility of the monitoring system is what sold Arkolia Energies on meteocontrol: The existing systems equipped with a broad range of different monitoring systems can be imported into the VCOM monitoring portal without any hardware changes. Arkolia Energies can now monitor and manage all systems in VCOM.

In 2015, the French grid operator Enedis imposed requirements regarding the management of feed-in active power (P0) and reactive power (Q0) on energy producers. meteocontrol developed the interface that enables Arkolia Energies to meet these needs.

VCOM – all systems at a glance
meteocontrol has designed the central monitoring platform VCOM with flexibility in mind. As a result, the measurement data of components made by the widest range of manufacturers can be integrated and processed for analysis and visualization. „This is a cost-efficient solution for system operators, one that also generates real savings in operation management,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The management of large system portfolios in particular becomes much more effective, error analysis easier and response time to system failures faster.“ meteocontrol also adapts software applications to the individual system and is developing additional remote-monitoring features for Arkolia Energies.

Augsburg, 12/07/2016 – meteocontrol GmbH, a PV service provider headquartered in Augsburg, delivers plant owners and operators an efficient total package for the rapid, cost-efficient upgrade of the monitoring units in their PV systems. The company has provided proof of its expertise once again at the 3 MW solar park „Abuzaderas“ operated by Tauber-Solar in southeastern Spain: it took just three-quarters of a day to replace the failure-prone monitoring solution at the park with the high-performance system made by meteocontrol.

In light of the old system“s very unstable data communications and an increasing number of failures in the bus system, Tauber-Solar decided to retrofit the monitoring system used by the „Abuzaderas“ PV system as quickly as possible and meteocontrol received the order.

Rapid tempo in Retrofitting

It took less than one day to complete the work at the Abuzaderas solar energy park. „One reason for our speed is definitely the modular and scalable technology we use in our products,“ said Martin Schneider, Managing Director of meteocontrol. „We can integrate existing data loggers into the current IT environment without a lot of extra work and merge the data in the monitoring portal into a complete system again.“ The new solution includes meteocontrol“s high-performance data loggers in conjunction with the company’s remote monitoring platform.

The monitoring system enables PV systems to be operated easily, reliably and cost-efficiently on a uniform Internet platform. Extensive analysis and alarm functions provide operators with a reliable tool that they can use to secure long-term earnings. The retrofit benefited from another plus as well: meteocontrol“s experts conducted the engineering for the project in advance at the company’s base in Augsburg and were able to provide the right accessories – such as the RS485 hub – on-site in Spain. „The experts from meteocontrol convinced us with their experience and their extensive, competent consulting,“ said Martin Schmitt, Managing Director of the Tauber-Solar service center. „They ensured the fast, safe installation of a complete solution that is both economical and user-friendly.“ Because integration into the meteocontrol system turned out to be so easy, Tauber-Solar is planning to carry out similar upgrades of other PV systems.
