(Stuttgart) – The Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is now supporting the new „BioHyMed“ project as a ZIM cooperation network. For at least a year, BioRegio STERN Management GmbH will now receive a total of 116,000 euros to establish a network for developing biohybrid products and processes. Together with universities, clinics and scientific institutions in the region and six SMEs as project partners, this will drive forward the biologisation of medical technology. More companies are welcome to join the network as project partners. They will receive targeted support to enable them to also submit promising applications for research and development to ZIM if required.

The participants in the new BioHyMed network are engaged in research and development in one of the most ground-breaking fields of the health care industry – the biologisation of medical technology. The combination of biological and technical products or processes – called biohybrids – will in future be commonplace in operating theatres. These include implants that either replace damaged cells, tissue or organs or stimulate the healing process – regeneration rather than replacement. The real challenges for medical technology are also the new procedures for integrating biological processes, mechanical instruments and high-tech electronics. Another aim of the BioHyMed project is to develop new methods and materials for coating and „activating“ surfaces using biological components. Coatings using tailored biomolecules or the body’s own cells promise better healing and fewer rejection reactions.

In-vitro diagnostics is another area covered by the project. This includes innovative analysis systems to identify hospital germs quickly and reliably on site, for example, but also companion diagnostics and biomarker identification procedures i.e. genetic investigations for planning customised therapy. For Project Manager Dr. Verena Grimm from BioRegio STERN Management GmbH, patient benefits are the project“s top priority. „Linking biotechnology and medical technology opens up entirely new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.“

The Verein zur Förderung der Biotechnologie und Medizintechnik e.V. was the original initiator of the project, and the successful application to ZIM was then submitted by BioRegio STERN Management GmbH. The Verein is an associated partner and will provide an advisory council to undertake expert assessments of funding applications from new project partners. TETEC GmbH, the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute, Medical Valley Hechingen Akademie e.V. and the urology clinic and Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen are also associated partners.

The BioHyMed project will initially receive a total of 116,000 euros over one year from ZIM and will launch on April 1 with these six SMEs from BioRegio STERN:

However, more SMEs are welcome. „We offer interested companies the uncomplicated opportunity to also become project partners,“ explains Dr. Grimm. „A consortium of several partners can even submit project applications to ZIM with a value of up to two million euros.“

The biotechnologist completed a tri-national degree course in Germany, Switzerland and France at the Ecole superieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg. After undertaking her dissertation at the University of Michigan in the United States, she received a doctorate from the Institute of Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart. She then worked for Greiner Bio-One GmbH for ten years as a product and marketing manager for multiplex analysis methods used in food safety, pharmaceutical product safety and human diagnostics. „This broad-ranging knowledge enables me to understand and reach various industries more easily,“ explains the 41-year-old. „As a project manager for BioRegio STERN Management GmbH, I will be able to put my expertise in developing, applying and marketing biotechnological methods to good use in improving links between local companies in the medical technology and biotechnology industry and help them develop opportunities for automated applications.“

The jury was won over by the unique user interface of the touch display. The central element – the so-called sphere – is surrounded by concentrically arranged instrument icons and activation icons which can be moved around via drag and drop. On the main screen, the sphere displays cutting and coagulation parameters large enough to be clearly visible from the sterile field.

If a user wishes to activate an instrument with the footswitch, for example, he or she simply moves the footswitch symbol on the touchscreen underneath the corresponding instrument symbol. The device switches over from handle to footswitch activation quickly and easily.

The display showing which instrument is currently activated is clearly visible from the operating table. An enlarged image of the corresponding instrument symbol appears which is graphically connected to the main sphere. The convenient, intuitive operation of the VIO 3 does not serve an end in itself but rather constitutes an essential safety factor; the more precisely and simply a device can be handled, the less likely it is that an error will be made during a surgical intervention. The user can concentrate completely on the patient. The VIO 3 boasts intuitive operation facilitated by a stepGUIDE function which gives recommendations for assignment of sockets and illuminates frames on sockets with active instruments – these being elements which enhance the operating safety of the VIO 3. The VIO 3 with its 6 sockets can be used in combination with the APC 3 plasma surgery device.
The Red Dot Award for Interface Design and almost all responses from user circles confirm that touchscreen operation via drag and drop is truly outstanding.

Jena, June 29, 2016 – The new, high-performance LEONARDO® DUAL 200 W laser from biolitec® will be used in many areas of minimally-invasive laser medicine. By combining two wavelengths (980 nm and 1470 nm), it provides the optimal settings for vaporization, coagulation, and the cutting of tissue.

Through the flexible selection of wavelengths, the high-performance laser can be used in various disciplines such as phlebology, proctology, gynecology, and ENT. The wavelength of 980 mm offers a high absorption in hemoglobin and is therefore also ideally suited for applications in urology. The advantages in urology include: Excellent hemostasis and quick and efficient prostate ablation. The laser therapy with the newest high-performance laser is especially well-suited for high-risk patients and requires only local or minimal anesthesia.

In combination with the XCAVATOR® or TWISTER™ fibers from biolitec®, the contact fibers provide excellent ablation and dependability. (Mynewsdesk) Beginning one’s professional life is an exciting time. It’s even better when companies make it easier for trainees to familiarize themselves with everyday working life. ulrich medical, an innovative medical technology manufacturer from Ulm, has even developed a multistage plan of action to accomplish this.

Acceptances for the trainee position are announced no later than November but the training itself doesn’t begin until September of the following year. ulrich medical has made this rather long period of time a bit shorter this year for the first time with a “get-to-know-you tour”. All new trainees along with their parents were invited to this event at the end of March. There was an enormous response – all of the trainees came and brought at least one parent along. During the combined tour through management buildings and production, the young people got to know their trainers and gathered their initial impressions of their new workplace environment. Together as a group, all questions were then answered in detail and initial contacts between participants were made. The feedback was enthusiastic. “Ultimately, we parents also gain an impression of our children’s future jobs,” said one delighted mother. “It’s great that we trainees have already had a chance to get to know each other. That made us feel less nervous,” added one trainee.

The next step will take place at the end of August. Shortly before the start of the training, the trainees will once again meet to spend an evening together in an informal atmosphere. “During bowling, it’s easy to start conversations with people. The shared experience connects people and helps eliminate the tension that is otherwise present on the first day of work,” confirms Anke Walkerling, head of HR at ulrich medical.

To conclude the familiarization process, the new trainees are invited to a joint workshop after a few weeks. Team-building will be frequently emphasized during this workshop in order to allow the young people to continue growing together as a group.

„To be successful in the USA, a market-focused presence is needed and this can only be ensured with a subsidiary,“ said CEO Klaus Kiesel at the founding of the U.S. subsidiary in the state of Missouri ten years ago. This is an assessment that has more than proven true, because ulrich medical USA has continuously developed its market share from the very beginning. In recent years, two-digit annual growth rates have consistently been recorded.

The parent company, headquartered in Ulm, has also continued to expand in 2015 with stable sales and earnings performance. „A success of this kind would not be possible without the professional expertise of our employees,“ says Christoph Ulrich, managing partner of ulrich medical.

Cancer prevention in gynecology with new LEONARDO® laser by biolitec®

Jena, September 16, 2014 – In a recent case study published in the specialist journal Gynecologic Oncology Reports, Italian medicals report the first successful prophylactic removal of fallopian tubes via laparoscopy and the innovative LEONARDO® diode laser by biolitec®.

Amongst gynecologists, the removal of both fallopian tubes is currently considered to be the most effective method to prevent ovarian cancer while preserving the production of sex hormones. This method is a sensible option especially for women between the age of 35 and 40 respectively who no longer wish for a child and have a high cancer risk. Up to now, the conventional excision of fallopian tubes is a complex procedure and not without complications.

With its precision the LEONARDO® laser makes it possible to remove the fallopian tube with a small endoscopic incision at the navel.

The intervention by the Italian surgical team was carried out highly precisely, gently and took 40 minutes. As the invisible laser light is coupled with visible red light, the surgeon is able to carry out all necessary steps with utmost precision and to close open vessels by heat without the need for changing instruments.

Complications during or after surgery had not been noticed. The patient received pain medication not until 6 hours after surgery and could leave the clinic one day after the intervention.

Dr. Luigi Nappi, head of the medical team: „A prophylactic removal of the fallopian tubes is important for women with a certain genetic disposition to prevent cancer from developing in the first place. In the future minimally invasive interventions with the LEONARDO® laser shall lead to a quicker recovery after surgery for women with the respective diagnosis. A welcome side effect is that the incision of no more than 2 cm to insert the endoscope and laser into the abdomen heals quickly and is nearly invisible.“

Jena, November 16th, 2012 – The world“s largest medical technology trade fair, Medica, is held again in Düsseldorf this year. biolitec® will present its wide variety of laser systems and application accessories for painless laser-based methods of treatment at its information booth G 46 in Hall 10.

As one of this year“s outstanding new developments, the revolutionary laser system HOLA™ (Hysteroscopic Outpatient Laser Applications) has been developed for the treatment of myomas in gynaecology. Myomas are benign tumours which affect every fourth to sixth woman in Europe, mostly between 30 and 50 years of age. Myomas can cause a variety of complications which can considerably reduce the patient“s quality of life. The laser therapy against myomas provides a gentle and painless alternative to conventional methods in gynaecology. While applied, the feeding artery is getting closed by a radial emitting laser fibre, thus no particles or other foreign substances are needed during the therapy. Thereby, HOLA™ does not damage the endometrium, and it enables a painless treatment under local anaesthesia. The laser energy allows for precise control of the tissue vaporisation with no bleeding and immediately visible results. In the aftermath, the patient can get back to normal activities immediately.

For the treatment of haemorrhoids of higher grades, biolitec® has developed the so called Laserhaemorrhoidoplastie (LHP™) during which nodal dilatations are reduced from within by the laser. Thereby, the sensitive anoderm and the mucosa are protected to a maximum. The natural anatomic structure stays intact, and risks such as anal stenoses are excluded. As no cuts or stitches are necessary, postoperative pain appears significantly less often in comparison to conventional surgical procedures, and recovery is accelerated.
