German market for apps is still growing

German app market is still on the rise.

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), January 31st 2018 – The German market for apps for smartphones and tablets keeps growing and just broke the 1.5 billion Euros mark in 2017. This reports the German high-tech association Bitkom in a recent press release. Based on numbers of the research institute research2guidance, this means almost a tripling compared to the year 2013, when sales were 547 million Euros. Compared with the year 2016, it is a plus of 4 percent.

„The boom continues“, states Achim Berg, president of Bitkom. „With wearables like smartwatches and fitness trackers the ecosystem around apps yet expands significantly.“ In 2017, 1.8 bn apps have been downloaded from the two biggest stores: two thirds accounted to Google“s Play Store, one third accounted to Apple“s App Store. Most of the sales (1.2 bn Euros, 79 percent) were made through in-app features such as the expansion of games, 232 mn Euros (15 percent) through advertisement and 91 mn Euros (6 percent) directly through the purchase price of the app.

The most popular according to Bitkom are apps for social networks, messengers, streaming services and games. On the rise are everyday helpers such as radar apps or apps warning against severe weather as well as fitness and health apps tracking steps or recording travelled distances.

„Germany is a very exciting market for apps and other software products with many many technically oriented customers“, says Bernd Hoeck, founder of bloodsugarmagic and go-to-market expert. „However, 1.8 bn app downloads sound impressive, but you need to relate that to approx. 5 mn apps available in the Google Play and Apple Store. Thus, there are many apps competing for visibility and customer recognition. Vendors need to create a dedicated market entry strategy focusing clearly on the targeted customer segments.“

German ITC market remains on a growth path

Bitkom expects a total turnover of 160 billion Euro in 2016 for the ITC market. The lack of professional employees remains a problem of the industry. bloodsugarmagic offers its services and a webcast to help foreign companies entering the market.

German ITC market remains on a growth path

German IT market is further on the rise.

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), March 30th 2016 – Based on a recent prognosis by German high-tech association Bitkom, the annual turnover of the German IT market for the first time ever is expected to break the 160 billion Euro limit in 2016. According to the prognosis, the industry as a whole will grow by 1.7 percent, with software sales being the strongest driver with more than 6 percent.

The software segment is expected to grow in 2016 with a plus of 6.2 percent to 21.5 billion Euros. IT services will climb by 2.7 percent to 38.2 billion Euro while sales with hardware according to Bitkom will rise only slightly by 0.8 percent to 23.8 billion Euro. In general, the branch information technology will generate 83.5 billion Euro – a plus of 3 percent.

„The software houses profit from the trend that the whole economy is moving towards digital business models“, says Thorsten Dirks, president of Bitkom.

Bitkom states that the general ITC market, which besides information technology also consists of telecommunication and consumer electronics, has grown much stronger in the past year than originally expected. Instead of the estimated plus of 1.9 percent, sales have risen by 2.8 percent in 2015 to 157.4 billion Euro. The reason for that lies in the smartphone boom of the second half of the year: the turnover with the devices has grown by 22.1 percent to 10.3 billion Euro. That is almost three times as much as originally expected.

The good situation on the market also leads to the creation of more jobs. Bitkom estimates that there will be about 20,000 more jobs by the end of 2016. „With 1.022 billion employees the Bitkom branch establishes its position as second biggest industrial employer, just behind mechanical engineering but considerably ahead of other leading industries such as automotive or the chemical industry“, says Dirks.

On the other hand, the industry is still having problems filling all those vacancies. According to Bitkom, there are still 43,000 open and hard to fill vacancies for IT experts. Dirks therefore warns: „Without the immigration of foreign specialists, without foreign students, without the international exchange, we can“t successfully shape the digital transformation.“

„Germany remains a strong growing and very exciting IT market“, declares Bernd Hoeck, founder of bloodsugarmagic and go-to-market expert. „Especially the combination of a growing market and a massive lack of IT experts creates the perfect opportunity for foreign companies for cooperation and entering this new, promising market.“

Switzerland will be Partner Country at CeBIT 2016

After the abolition of the minimum rate of the Euro the country is facing new challenges. bloodsugarmagic helps foreign IT companies to gain a foothold in the Swiss market.

Switzerland will be Partner Country at CeBIT 2016

Switzerland remains an attractive ICT market in spite of several challenges.

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), September 8th 2015 – With Switzerland a partner country presents itself at CeBIT 2016 that is globally in the lead when it comes to the use of digital technologies but whose ICT branch on the other hand is facing big challenges. The Swiss are hoping to show their „innovative strength and digital competence to an international audience“ at the world“s biggest information technology exhibition in Hanover.

With a gross value added of about 27 billion Swiss Francs in 2011, ICT is the sixth largest economical branch in Switzerland. In the past four years the number of jobs in this area has grown by twelve percent to 197,600. Until 2022 it is expected that another 87,000 skilled workers will be needed. According to a survey by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office almost all citizens under 45 years are using the Internet. Looking at the population aged 15 and above, the amount lies by considerable 84 percent. Furthermore, the Media Use Index 2013 has found out that the 8.9 million Swiss inhabitants are globally in the lead when it comes to the concentration of smartphones and the mobile use of the Internet. The result of another survey is that 80 percent of Swiss companies see digitalization as a chance for their business – especially in the financial and insurance sector, mechanical and plant engineering and medical technology. Strategies of digitalization are also gaining in importance in the pharmaceutical industry and agriculture. Hence, Switzerland really seems to be predestined for being partner country at CeBIT, says also Oliver Frese, member of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe.

After the abolition of the minimum rate of the Euro in the beginning of 2015, it didn“t look too good for the Swiss ICT branch though: in the end of March a survey by the Swiss branch association Swico showed that the whole sector had a lot of trouble with this development. While the segments Software and IT Services were expecting uneconomical growth for the second quarter of 2015, the segments IT Technology, Consumer Electronics and Imaging/Printing/Finishing were even facing veritable signs of decay. All segments saw the strong Swiss Franc as the biggest challenge. Meanwhile, the biggest shock has been overcome and the mood is getting somewhat optimistic again. The segments Consulting, Software and IT Services face the second half of 2015 positively. The segments IT Technology, Consumer Electronics and Imaging/Printing/Finishing remain skeptical while ratings have at least improved in comparison to the previous quarter.

Furthermore, the enormous lack of skilled personnel and declining margins have in the meantime again replaced the strong Swiss Franc as the biggest direct challenge of the branch. The indirect problems that are connected with the currency strength though are gradually gaining crucial relevance. Part of the development is that the enhanced price gap between Switzerland and the EU environment leads to increasing direct imports, price erosion and a growing foreign competition. That“s the reason why a lot of Swiss ICT companies are on the lookout for new markets. Especially medium-sized enterprises and start-ups are therefore hoping for establishing new contacts with little effort at CeBIT.

On the other side of the border there“s also interest in cooperation: According to a survey by the German branch association BITKOM, Switzerland belongs to the top-10 trading partners for German IT and telecommunications companies. Two third of the companies questioned stated that Switzerland will be an interesting market for them in the future.

With their expert knowledge of the German as well as the Swiss market, bloodsugarmagic can be an interesting sparring partner and arrange appropriate contacts.

„We follow the developments of the Swiss IT market with interest“, says Bernd Hoeck, go-to-market expert and managing partner at bloodsugarmagic. „It“s impressive to see how fast the branch has risen again after the abolition of the minimum rate of the Euro and is looking forward. Switzerland remains an attractive market for ICT and offers a great chance for foreign IT service companies to engage in joint ventures and other forms of cooperation. Very gladly we help with establishing appropriate contacts. Just get in touch with us!“

Swiss companies will present themselves at the central stand in Hall 6 with a thematic focus on Research & Innovation, Financial Technologies and Business Security at CeBIT, March 14th till 18th 2016. The partner country will also be present in the area Communication and Networks in Hall 13.

Industry 4.0: Germany is ready for the next step

Everybody is talking about Industry 4.0. A new study by Roland Berger reveals which European Countries are actually prepared for the next industrial revolution. bloodsugarmagic knows how to jump on the bandwagon.

Industry 4.0: Germany is ready for the next step

Germany belongs to the Frontrunners when it comes to Industry 4.0

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), June 16th 2015 – After three industrial revolutions in the past, Europe is now on the verge of a fourth, which will irrevocably change the way goods are manufactured and services are offered. The term „Industry 4.0“ refers to the computerization of the manufacturing industry. Physical objects will be seamlessly integrated into the information network, they are able to communicate with each other, exchange information and operate each other.

To remain economically successful, it is essential for a company to be part of this trend and to adapt its business model accordingly.

The consultancy Roland Berger has now created an Industry 4.0 Readiness Index to find out which European key industrial countries are prepared for the next industrial revolution.

They looked at two aspects: industrial excellence and value network. While the latter stands for high value added, industry openness, innovation network and internet sophistication, „industrial excellence“ comprises production process sophistication, degree of automation, workforce readiness and innovation intensity.

The results formed four major groups: the Frontrunners, the Traditionalists, the Potentials and the Hesitators.

As Hesitators, that lack a reliable industrial base, the researchers identified a mixture of southern and eastern European countries such as Spain, Italy, Poland and Croatia. „Many of them suffer from severe fiscal problems and are therefore not able to make their economies future-proof“, states the study.

The Potentials have a weakening industrial base but according to the researchers just need to „find the right way to tap their potential“. France and the UK, but also Norway and the Netherlands belong to that category.

Traditionalists have a sound industrial base but lack initiatives to take industry to the next era. They can mainly be found in Eastern Europe, for example Hungary or the Czech Republic.

As Frontrunners on the other hand the experts of Roland Berger see countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Finland and Austria. They are characterized by „a large industrial base and very modern, forward-looking business conditions and technologies“.

„Industry 4.0 is much more than a buzz word for the IT-markets in Germany and Switzerland“, says Bernd Hoeck, Go-to-Market expert at bloodsugarmagic. „It is a fundamental shift in the way industrial control systems work together. It creates a huge demand for new and better software and hardware products in the area of security and integration. Therefore Industry 4.0 will cause substantial changes in the IT market landscape.“

bloodsugarmagic knows what is needed on the market at the moment and has a long-standing experience in go-to-market services for the German IT market. We gladly help your company to get a foot in the door in Germany.

ECM remains hot topic in Germany

Companies see ECM solutions for mobile devices and digital files as top trends of the branch. Only 4 out of 10 enterprises use ECM company-wide. This is a huge opportunity for new vendors, says bloodsugarmagic.

ECM remains hot topic in Germany

Most companies use ECM not as a company wide strategy but for single departments.

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), April 28th 2015 – The market for Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions is still growing strongly. This is the result of a recent survey by the German high-tech association BITKOM. According to that study, there will be an approximate turnover of 1.8 billion Euros with hardware, software and services relating to ECM in Germany in 2015. That“s an increase of about 6 percent in comparison to the previous year.

„The amount of information that reaches the companies is permanently growing. ECM solutions make this flood of information controllable“, says Bernhard Zöller, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors of the ECM competence center at BITKOM. „The digitalization of business processes in enterprises is mandatory for the digitalization of the economy.“

The BITKOM survey also provides information about the most important trends of the branch in 2015 based on topics mentioned by vendors. According to that, the most relevant topic in ECM solutions is support for mobile devices such as smartphones or tablet computers. 40 percent of the ECM companies questioned find this topic important and move towards this feature. Mobile use of ECM becomes more and more a commodity feature – at least, if you ask the vendors. If more and more (non-windows) tablets replace traditional laptops, there is a growing demand for ECM support for these devices.

Slightly less (37 percent) name digital files, such as the electronic personnel file or a customer record, as top trends. Other relevant topics are tools for the cooperation in teams and electronic invoice processing (26 percent each).

However, there still is a huge potential for growth. Most companies use ECM not as a company wide strategy but for single departments. Just 4 out of 10 use it company wide. This leaves room for improvement. For new vendors this is a huge opportunity to rip and replace legacy ECM systems used just by one or two departments. In addition to growing within existing customers there are many potential customers that have not yet selected ECM technologies.

„ECM is still a huge market in Germany“, says Bernd Hoeck, Managing Partner of the go-to-market specialist bloodsugarmagic. „We see quite some movement in the market. While some traditional vendors are struggling to keep up with customer demands, new vendors are bringing in fresh approaches. We see new local and foreign ECM vendors entering the DACH market.“

German IT firms search for Nearshore and Offshore Partners

One out of four German IT firms already use European or worldwide partners to fulfill services and projects in Germany. Lack of skilled local personnel offers great opportunities for near- and offshoring models.

German IT firms search for Nearshore and Offshore Partners

More and more German IT companies are looking for foreign partners.

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), February 23, 2015 – More and more IT projects in Germany are fulfilled in international cooperation using European or international partners. According to a recent study by German high-tech association BITKOM with 710 IT companies in Germany, one out of four IT companies in Germany currently uses foreign partners in projects and expects to use more foreign capacity in the future. German IT companies use European partners in nearshoring models as well as offshoring to e.g. Asia or South America. European partners are slightly more favorable (26%) than non-European partners (23%).

Continuous years of growth in the German IT sector have led to a dramatic shortage of skilled personnel. German IT tries to compensate this with various measures. One is to establish partnerships, joint-ventures or even acquiring IT companies abroad with suiting skill sets. While near- and offshoring models are not new to the German IT market, the motivation has changed dramatically.

„We see a clear shift in the reasons for near- and offshoring. Ten years ago, the main motivation to use near- or offshore resources was cost reduction. Today it“s often a lack of local capacity“, says Bernd Hoeck, managing partner of the go-to-market specialist bloodsugarmagic.

In addition, many German IT firms have a long track record using near- and offshoring delivery models. Companies like GFT Technologies AG, a German powerhouse for IT solutions for the financial services industry, have almost 20 years of experience using near- and offshore project delivery and act today on a global scale.

„Both vendors and buyers of near- and offshore project delivery have gained a lot more experience over the recent years“, Hoeck adds. „Today German IT companies have made their homework and actively look for either near- or offshore partners. Now is the right time for foreign IT firms to engage with the German market. In order to stand out of the crowd, foreign IT companies need to focus on visibility and reputation building in Germany. We can help with our low cost, high impact services in order to do so.“

Demand of skilled workers offers chances for market entry

Every second IT company sees the shortage of qualified staff as hindering for the development of their business. This is a good time to enter the German market as an IT services company from a neighboring country, says bloodsugarmagic.

Demand of skilled workers offers chances for market entry

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), Februar 20, 2015 – The lack of skilled personnel in the IT sector is still the biggest obstacle for the development of the market. This show the latest numbers of a survey published by the German high-tech association BITKOM.

Every second company (52 percent) suffers from shortage of skilled workers and sees the situation on the German IT market as „hindering“ or „very hindering“ for their business because the domestic demand is there and the companies need staff to do the work.

The number of companies that want to hire staff has again increased. 68 percent of the companies questioned are planning to create additional jobs in 2015 (2014: 63 percent), only 5 percent foresee workforce reductions (2014: 7 percent).

While this trend is troublesome for the German IT companies, it is a chance for companies of the neighboring foreign countries to fill the gap of missing appropriate personnel – at least temporarily. The German IT industry is looking abroad to find qualified staff and resourcing partners.

„The shortage of skilled IT staff is a great opportunity especially for foreign companies in the IT services sector“, says Bernd Hoeck, managing partner of the go-to-market specialist bloodsugarmagic. „It is crucial to be visible on the market – at least virtually – to engage in cooperations and joint ventures with German companies.“
