The handling of electronic data exchange has long been an integral part of the European construction process. In Germany, the so-called GAEB interface has been established for the exchange of service specifications and offers in the area of invitations to tender. All common software solutions in the construction sector must support this interface, which allows, among other things, for the direct exchange of data between planners and tradesmen for service specifications and an electronic tendering. If European construction companies wish to participate in private or public tenders in Germany, they must always use the GAEB file format and provide their offers as a GAEB file.

The client

As part of the tender, the client’s architect first creates the service specifications in his/her tendering programme. Then the architect sends the service specifications in GAEB data format to the companies that are eligible to carry out the relevant trade. In the process, the architects in Germany also can always request to receive the offer back as a file. They do not want to manually type in the offers for a price comparison in the form of a price comparison list, but rather they want to import the prices and data into their software quickly and easily from a GAEB file.

The construction company

The construction company now has to open the GAEB file and must be able to record the prices for the many items as easily as possible. If the service specifications items consist of many individual services, the pricing on the part of the company has to be reworked, which is usually time-consuming. Many of the construction companies use their own solutions for this that are based on spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel. In Excel, for example, separate calculation options can be carried out for material requirements, as well as wage and time allotments, and the price calculation can thus be significantly simplified.

Intermediary between GAEB and Excel

Using the GAEB-Online 2016 software from the company gaeb-online from Walzbachtal, GAEB tenders can be sent directly to Microsoft Excel®,for example, at the click of a mouse for further calculation. However, the Windows programme GAEB-Online 2016 is also easily compatible with any other Office package, such as OpenOffice® or LibreOffice®. As a result, the processors can perform all calculations as usual in their usual spreadsheets without elaborate and manual reworking or convenience constraints.

Importing prices

Once the calculation is completed, the unit prices are returned to the tender from Excel® via GAEB-Online 2016 and then are used to create an electronic quotation file for the architect. In this case, GAEB-Online 2016 automatically provides the correct file format, regardless of whether the architect has created his / her service specifications in the formats GAEB 90, GAEB 2000 or GAEB XML.

Also works without installing

With the product GAEB-Online 2016 USB, there is also a new solution that can be used without installation on a computer. The programme is completely installed on a USB stick and is ready for use directly on any Windows computer with a USB connection. The product GAEB-Online 2016 USB makes it possible to calculate offers in GAEB format independently of a specific workstation and allows mobile work on the road, at the home office or at the customer’s premises.

Try with no commitment

The GAEB-Online 2016 programme can be downloaded from the Internet and tested without obligation before buying. The programme can be used with Windows 7 or a newer version. In addition to the mobile version on a USB stick, a special terminal server version for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft Windows Server 2012 is also available for working in a team. A detailed online guide and a clearly arranged manual in PDF format help to learn more about the software. If European construction companies want to participate in German invitations to bid, they have to use the so-called GAEB file format. At very little expense, European construction companies can now carry out a data exchange with architects and contracting authorities that work in accordance with the GAEB standard.

All it requires is to have an application package like Microsoft Office or a cost-free Office like OpenOffice available. The only other thing that is needed is the small but practical software app, GAEB-Online 2016 from the „gaeb-online company“ in Walzbachtal which provides the interface.

To communicate an offer in Germany, the architect sends the construction company an electronic specification in the German GAEB DA83 default format. This can be transmitted by the contracting authority in such currently common GAEB formats in Germany as GAEB 90, GAEB 2000 or GAEB XML. With the GAEB software GAEB-Online 2016, the service specification in all these formats can simply be opened on the construction company“s PC and for every specification, the asking price can be captured.

In connection with the previously mentioned Office programs, a genuine calculation of prices can also be carried out at any time by means of the spreadsheet. To do this, the construction company exports the GAEB service specification to an Excel table, for example, and calculates the unit price, the price component and surcharges there.

When exporting to MS Excel, the position numbers, short description, quantity and units are always transferred from the service specification. In Excel itself, the wage and surcharge calculations are simplified significantly, since this method always offers additional, individual price break options for material requirements and possible rebates, wage minutes, etc.

The unit prices determined in this way can simply be imported back into GAEB-Online 2016 and the program will create out of it a quotation file in the DA84 file format. The quotation is printed and the DA84 file is transferred back to the architects who can read in the prices from the file directly into the AVA program they are using to create their price comparison automatically.

GAEB-Online 2016 runs on Windows 7 or higher under 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. The GAEB-Online 2016 program as well as its online help program and the PDF handbook are only available in the German language.

For all users who prefer to work on mobile devices, there is an additional variation of the program called „GAEB-Online 2016 USB“ available on a USB stick. This mobile solution makes it possible to perform a „seat-of-the-pants calculation“ on any Windows PC that has a USB port.

In addition, for larger teams, special terminal server versions are available for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Windows Server 2012.

The free version of GAEB-Online 2016 can be tested for 8 days. The demo version can be downloaded from the website http://www.gaeb-online.de for free. BHS-Sonthofen Appoints New Mixing Division Sales Manager for U.S. Site

Mike Kerins, the new Mixing Division Sales Manager at BHS-Sonthofen Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolin

Mike Kerins is the new Mixing Division Sales Manager at the American subsidiary BHS-Sonthofen Inc. based in Charlotte, North Carolina. BHS-Sonthofen has appointed him to further strengthen the sales team, which has quadrupled the number of mixers installed in North America since 2011. Moreover, BHS is now offering its customers the option to carry out material and field tests at their own facilities by providing laboratory mixers on a rental basis from the Charlotte location.

BHS-Sonthofen has appointed Mike Kerins to further capitalize on the continually increasing acceptance of BHS mixers in North America. Kerins has over 10 years of experience in the concrete industry through his time with CEMEX and Pavestone and certifications from the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA), the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). Kerins has managed the design, start-up, operation and quality control of plants throughout the US. He graduated magna cum laude with a B. Sc from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.

Kerins will provide customers with expert technical consulting on all topics concerning BHS mixing technology. He will also draw upon his expertise to oversee tests with laboratory mixers that customers can rent from BHS to run trials at their own facilities.

At BHS-Sonthofen Inc., Kerins will support project management in ensuring even shorter delivery times for mixers and spare parts in the United States.

Dennis Kemmann, the Managing Director of BHS-Sonthofen GmbH, has the following to say of Kerins: „Mike is a recognized specialist who knows his way around concrete plants and construction sites. He has familiarized himself with all different kinds of mixers over the course of his career. Ever since BHS-Sonthofen Inc. established the Mixing Division in 2011, the company has successfully established the German mixers on the American market. For instance, twin-shaft batch mixers make up the lion“s share of the 220,000 m³ of in-situ concrete required to construct the New NY Tappan Zee Bridge. They are also producing tens of thousands of cubic meters of concrete for the bridge“s precast structural elements, some of which weigh over 300 tons. BHS-Sonthofen single- and twin-shaft batch mixers are also becoming increasingly popular for use in dam stabilization projects and for conditioning backfill material in mining applications.

Yanmar Construction Equipment Europe presented the new 2.6-ton mini excavator SV26 in Berlin, on April 15, 2014. As the first machine that has been completely constructed and designed in France, the SV26 has been especially developed to meet the needs and requirements of rental companies. It shows numerous benefits such as: very low transport weight, 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel engine with direct injection for maximum power, advanced user convenience and safety. Also, the high security standards were optimised and the machine facilitates maintenance work. The SV26 can be used for a wide range of applications in the areas of construction, agriculture and landscaping.

The SV26 is a multifunctional machine. It combines high-class technical features, superior power and compact dimensions in an ideal way. That makes it the perfect choice for a wide range of applications, which is crucial for rental companies. With its low transport weight of 2,600 kg – with rubber tracks and cab – the machine can be transported on a small trailer. Yanmar“s diesel engine reduces emission and fuel consumption to less than four litres per hour while working with high power: 17.4 kW at 2,400 rpm. Moreover, an optional system automatically reduces the engine speed when the machine has not been used for more than four seconds. The patented VIPPS hydraulic system (ViO Progressive 3-Pumps System) combines three systems that work simultaneously. In accordance with the work being performed, pumps will be activated increasing work speed and facilitating the usage of the machine. With its very short tail, the new mini excavator can easily operate on narrow jobsites.

The large cab windows and the shape of the SV26 guarantee a perfect panoramic view. A LED light positioned at the lower part of the boom, ensures optimal visibility of the work area – even at night. Another highlight: A new digital display allows to manage working time, daily maintenance operations and also to program interventions. Furthermore, it provides real time information of the status of the machine. Thus, the operator can immediately find out about any malfunction or anomaly. These features help to optimise the safety level – for both, the operator and the machine. In addition, the machine offers easy ways for fast and efficient maintenance by giving better access to engine radiator as well as easily removable panels.

Automatic flux feeding in continuous casting processes: all the stand-alone system needs is pneumatic air

The S&B Industrial Minerals group has successfully commissioned a Flux Feeder ST2P-3 unit of its Stollberg brand – the worldwide first supply of this type of flux feeding system – at the thin-slab casting plant of OMK in the Russian region of Nizhni Novgorod. With its latest Flux Feeder model, the ST2P-3, S&B has rounded off its range of automatic flux feeding solutions with an easy-to-use system that has no special requirements on the media supply system in the steel works.

Especially for thin-slab casting plants, which are designed for casting and direct rolling, it is paramount that the casting flux be evenly distributed and fed at a constant rate into the mould. These plants do not provide any possibility of inspecting the surface of the cast strand. Therefore, there is no chance to remove any surface defects prior to rolling. In other words, care must be taken to create the preconditions for a constantly good surface quality when the casting process starts.

Flux Feeders provide a much better strand quality than manually fed casting fluxes. While the latter are added in undefined quantities, automatic feeding ensures that the mould flux trickles down onto the meniscus in a uniform manner. Any disturbing effect on the meniscus due to the impact caused by larger flux quantities that may result in surface defects and the mixing up of slag and flux material is reliably prevented. Moreover, automatic feeding ensures that there is a uniform and uninterrupted flux film between the strand and the mould plates.

The Flux Feeder of the ST2P-3 type is a compact, only 50 cm high mobile unit, which can be easily positioned under the flux containers. It conveys the flux material in precisely metered amounts to the mould and distributes it uniformly on the meniscus. As proved by experience from other continuous casters Flux Feeders reduce surface and subsurface defects of the solidified strand by 10 to 30 percent.

The designers placed greatest emphasis on developing a system that would be extremely easy to operate and only have very modest demands on the media supply system. Easy-to-operate pressure control devices ensure that the volumetric flow can be precisely adjusted.

The ST2P-3 Flux Feeder does not require any sophisticated media supply system. All it needs is dried pneumatic air or nitrogen. It operates fully pneumatically and independently of any power supply. This makes it an extremely low-maintenance device, guaranteeing high availability under operating conditions.

The equipment in use at OMK comprises three storage containers for different flux grades, each with a filling volume of 2.5 m3, the mobile Flux Feeder, the feeding lines for conveying the flux material to the mould as well as the distributors which spread the flux material onto the meniscus.

For switching between the flux types, the Flux Feeder is simply moved under the corresponding container and fixed in place. All this is done by hand. Moving the Flux Feeder from one container to another, takes just a few minutes. The feeding hoses can be flexibly arranged according to the specific situation on the casting platform. They may run horizontally, over distances of several meters.

Like with its „big brother“, the ST2P-2 Flux Feeder, the storage containers are filled out of big bags. This saves considerable amounts of flux material. Whereas in the past, when the material was delivered in standard sacks of 10 kg, some five percent of the material remained inside the sacks. With big bags, this loss is reduced to virtually zero.

In addition to electronically controlled systems ST2P1 and ST2P-2 – which can be integrated into the process control of continuous casters – S&B is with the Stollberg Flux Feeder ST2P-3 now also offering a compact, pneumatically operated system.

Background
Granulated casting fluxes allow trouble-free, efficient and environmentally friendly casting. During the last few years, these features have led to a growing use of granulated fluxes, increasingly substituting pulverized material. Unlike pulverized flux material, granulated fluxes provide a material layer of uniform thickness on the meniscus.

The still customary practice of feeding fluxes manually has a number of drawbacks. Manual feeding frequently leads to varying flux film thicknesses, causing non-uniform temperature distribution on the meniscus. If large amounts of pulverized or granulated fluxes are added, turbulences may lead to subsurface inclusions in the cast strand. In downstream processing, these inclusions may cause shells or other surface defects.

Additionally, the Flux Feeders improve the working conditions on the casting platform and increase operator safety, because automatic flux feeding makes it unnecessary for the foundryman to constantly remain within the immediate vicinity of the mould.

Online modelling of the continuous casting process: New software tool for instant recognition of flux film condition

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is the first company in the world to use the new „Mould Screen“ software from S&B Industrial Minerals GmbH for modelling the behaviour of the flux film in the continuous casting mould. Mould Screen recognizes unfavourable conditions in the mould that may lead to poor quality or disruptions to the casting process, for example through breakouts. It alerts the operators to critical operating conditions, enabling them to take timely and objective action.

Mould Screen calculates the behaviour of the flux film between the strand surface and the mould plates – which so far had not been measurable in any way – and displays it graphically on a screen.

First tests performed at Salzgitter at the end of 2011 and in spring 2012 had convinced the operators that Mould Screen would be able to visualize the behaviour of the flux film in an unprecedented, reliable manner. In a test phase, it is now being investigated how Mould Screen can be used under real production conditions. The system was installed on one of Salzgitter“s continuous casters at the end of October 2012 and has been in 24/7 operation ever since. The tests are being accompanied by the Technical University RWTH Aachen within the framework of a diploma thesis.

For the tests, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH integrated the Mould Screen computer into the PLC system of its continuous casting line No. 4 and into the existing software environment. Mould Screen receives the measured data online, processes them and displays the results in real time.

Mould Screen answers questions like „What happens when the casting speed, cooling water rate, the supply pressure or temperature change?“ on the spot. For example, by objectively setting the conditions for casting flux infiltration at the meniscus, Mould Screen can improve the efficiency of breakout prediction systems and help avoid the resulting damage. First investigations have shown that Mould Screen can, for example, reduce the number of false sticker alarms.

Furthermore, the model can provide new, so far unavailable information on strand shell formation, which may serve as a basis for further optimization of existing models.
The user can choose between a display of the current state of operation or the simulation of various operating scenarios computed by the „Modify“ tool. Additionally, it offers the possibility of reviewing and explaining unclear phenomena from the past by evaluating historical data.

Mould Screen displays all process-relevant variables, such as strand shell thickness, the temperature field in the strand shell and, by this, the strand surface temperature, the local and integral heat flux, heat transfer resistance in the flux film and the flux film thickness (liquid and solid), the water temperature in the cooling channels as well as the surface temperature of the copper plates. In the computation, Mould Screen considers aspects such as fluid mechanics, heat dissipation from the inside out, phase transformations, temperature-dependent material properties of the steel, as well as the properties of the casting flux. On top of that, machine parameters, the temperature, pressure and quantity of the cooling water as well as mould oscillation are taken into account in the calculation.
