The European Union officially supports the international trade show agrofood Nigeria 2015. This becomes evident from a letter of 28 October 2014 of Michel Arrion, Head of Delegation and Ambassador of the European Union – Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the Economic Community of West Africa States.

AICC, Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana

agrofood West Africa 2014 – leading exhibitors have already re-booked

Ghana is one of the „top export markets 2014“ says the German Ministry for Economic Affairs. Reasons for this are above-average growth and a stable business environment. A professional market entry to Ghana and West Africa is paved by agrofood West Africa. The 2nd International Trade Show on Agriculture, Food and Beverage Technology and Food Trade is scheduled for 2 to 4 December 2014 at the Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana.

The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Germany Trade & Invest have identified six countries that earn increased attention of the German export economy. State Secretary Stefan Kapferer: „Ghana is characterized by an above-average growth, a positive development in the core sectors of the German middle class and a stable business environment.“ Great opportunities also open up for mechanical engineering.

The trade fair specialist fairtrade Messe recognized this potential and organise the 2nd edition of agrofood West Africa in December 2014. With 1,326 professional visitors from 37 countries, with a share of 75 per cent of decision makers, discussing business with 81 exhibitors from 21 countries, already the first edition of this new hub for West Africa has been a great success. 86% of the exhibitors in 2013 would recommend agrofood West Africa. Leading exhibitors such as Döhler, Gea Westfalia, Wild and Windmöller & Hölscher have already re-booked their stands for 2014.

The Ghanaian Ministries of Food and Agriculture and of Trade and Industry support the event and an agrofood West Africa industry portal is erected to facilitate relations between buyers and sellers all year round. 1,470 professionals from the target region are already logged in. agrofood goes Nigeria

Imports of food processing and packaging technology

agrofood Nigeria: Premiere on 28-30 April 2015 in Lagos

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world (179 million inhabitants). Nigeria also stands for an abundance of natural resources such as oil, gas and agricultural land and an attractive and fast growing consumer market. The Nigerian agriculture and food processing industry attracts massive private and public investment. Against this backdrop the German trade fair specialists fairtrade launch agrofood Nigeria. The 1st International Trade Show on Agriculture, Food, Beverage & Packaging Technology and Food, Beverages & Hospitality is scheduled for 28 to 30 April 2015 at the brand-new Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

The German trade show specialists fairtrade launch „agrofood Nigeria“ at the brand-new Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos on 28-30 April 2015. agrofood Nigeria consists of agro, food + bev tec and food + hospitality Nigeria. The Heidelberg based organisers have a wealth of experience in the agrofood sector as fairtrade also organise „iran agrofood“ in Tehran since 1994 (766 exhibitors and 32,200 visitors in 2013) and have just recently held „agrofood & plastprintpack West Africa“ in Accra, Ghana last December featuring 81 exhibitors and 1,326 visitors.
„The idea to launch a professional platform especially for the Nigerian business community was brought up by the exhibitors and the organisers of national pavilions at our „agrofood & plastprintpack West Africa 2013″ in Accra last December“, says Martin März, fairtrade“s CEO. „Then we presented the project at a meeting with the economic counsellors of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden in Lagos this February and received an all-around positive feed-back. Therefore we are excited to create this new major platform for our long-term customers.“

To create valuable synergies for exhibitors and visitors alike, agrofood Nigeria is held in conjunction with plastprintpack Nigeria, the 1st International Trade Show on Plastics, Composites, Chemistry and Printing & Packaging Solutions and Material.

As Austria is already committed to participate with a group of companies, the Commercial Counsellor with the Austrian Embassy in Lagos, Ms Nella Hengstler, points out: „Nigeria will be the next global manufacturing hub. The sheer size of Nigeria“s market combined with its large and young work force will attract massive investments in the manufacturing industry. Machines and production materials will continue to be imported, though. I therefore welcome and support agrofood & plastprintpack Nigeria 2015 as it is important for European suppliers to be on ground early before the real run on Nigeria starts“.

The partners of fairtrade in Nigeria are AHK Nigeria-the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria and the Nigerian-German Business Association-NGBA. Andre Rönne, delegate of AHK and general manager of NGBA points out: „Increasing prosperity and the rapidly increasing population numbers are the consumer-promoting factors in Nigeria, which is also reflected by investments into the construction of shopping malls and the food processing and food packaging industry. The agrofood & plastprintpack Nigeria comes at exactly the right time, and we look forward to a constructive and successful cooperation with the fairtrade team.“

According to VDMA-The German Engineering Association, Nigerian imports between 2010 and 2012 of food processing and packaging technology have increased from 198 million Euros to 275 million Euros, an increase of 39 per cent. In the same period imports of agricultural machinery and equipment went up from 46 million Euros to 62 million Euros, plus 35 per cent and imports of finished food products rose by 11 per cent from 3.7 billion US dollars in 2009 to 4.1 billion US dollars in 2010.

Experts frequently describe Nigeria as the economic powerhouse in West Africa, because it is the 2nd largest economy in Africa, expected to overtake South Africa in the near future and expected to become one of the world’s Top 20 economies by 2050.
„We will make the stay in Lagos comfortable for our exhibitors as we organize a shuttle-service from the airport to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, and from there on a daily basis to and from the Landmark Convention Centre“, says Dominik Rzepka, head of PR with fairtrade.

The brand-new Landmark Convention Centre is strategically positioned on the grounds of Landmark Village, a spectacular beach front location extending over 9.4 acres on Victoria Island, the heart of the vibrant and lively Lagos business district. Lying in close proximity to the British International School, Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Oriental Hotel, The Palms Shopping Mall, Exxon Mobil HQ and Diamond Bank HQ, this location makes it easily accessible from anywhere in the city. The Landmark Village develops over 300 meters of beachfront overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and accommodating also the Hard Rock Cafe and the Shiro Japanese Restaurant.

The Landmark Convention Centre provides modern and flexible exhibiting and conferencing solutions with a ceiling height of 14m, power connections provided at every 6m throughout the hall through underground electrical cabling network, five spacious meeting rooms and two larger conference rooms of varying sizes from 8 to 150 attendees and catering operated by Silver Plates, a top-notch international F&B chain.

Private investments into the branches oil and gas, mining, agriculture, food processing industry, retailing and energy as well as public investment into infrastructural projects made Ghana an important hub for foreign companies for West Africa. The agriculture and food processing industry of West African benefit from growing population figures and increasing private consumption. In Ghana this trend is also been reflected in investments into the construction of shopping malls and into the food processing and food packaging industry. According to VDMA-The German Engineering Association, West Africa imported agricultural machinery and equipment, in 2011, at a volume of 167.9 million Euros, after 135.4 million Euros in 2010. This marks an increase of 24.0%. Imports of food processing and packaging machinery and equipment, in 2011, have increased to 567.4 million Euros, compared to 341.3 million Euros in 2010, a plus of 66.2%. It is not least these figures why the experts of the branch have an optimistic view. „I am convinced: in 10 years from now we will witness the great Africa boom. By then, for us working in the field of packaging technology, business-wise the continent will play a similarly important role as Asia does today,“ claims Friedbert Klefenz, President of Bosch Packaging Technology and Chairman of the board of the packaging machinery sector within VDMA.

The trade fair specialist fairtrade Messe recognized this potential and launch agrofood West Africa. The 1st International Trade Show on Agriculture & Livestock, Food, Beverage & Packaging Technology and Food, Beverages & Hospitality is scheduled to be held from 3 to 5 December 2013 at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana. According to Martin März, Managing Director with fairtrade, agrofood West Africa targets to become the leading regional west-African trade show in the field of agriculture and food processing. „Like „iran agrofood“, the trade show will be the place-to-be for buyers from West Africa as well as technology leader from Europa, Asia and America,“ states März. Two decades of experience in organising trade fairs in the field of „agrofood“ and a strong institutional partner AHK, Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana make these targets realistic.

To create valuable synergies for exhibitors and visitors alike, agrofood West Africa is held in conjunction with printpackplast West Africa, the 1st International Trade Show on Plastics, Composites, Chemistry and Printing & Packaging Solutions and Material.

Delicious Swiss Food

Swiss food producer generated growth of almost 30% in the organic product segment – growing in international markets

Bischofszell Food Ltd looks back on a challenging financial year 2011. The food producer saw a decline in sales by 1.3% due to the difficult market environment with a strong franc and strong competitive pressure in the retail business. However, Bina generated growth of almost 30% in the organic product segment.

Bischofszell Food Ltd generated sales amounting to 574 million francs in 2011 (previous year: CHF 585 million). Ready meals accounted for 265 million, beverages for 129 million, potato products for 120 million and fruit for 61 million francs. Roughly a quarter of total sales were generated by the catering trade, i.e. hotels, hospitals and restaurants. The demand for high-quality products by Bischofszell Culinarium such as the wholesome Delifit meals has increased in this sector. Bina sold a total of 222,000 tons of food products, which is just under the sales volume of the previous year. „The strong franc and the price war in the Swiss retail trade left their mark“, says Managing Director Otmar Hofer. Despite the difficult economic environment, the Thurgau-based food producer successfully defended its strong market position.

High market shares in the domestic market, growth in export markets

Meanwhile, every second fruit juice or ice tea consumed in Switzerland comes from Bischofszell. Yet, Bina considers further growth in the Swiss market difficult in view of the already high market shares. „We expect marginal domestic growth at best“, explains Otmar Hofer. However, Bina sees potential in international markets, where sales rose by 33% in the past year. „Our Swiss quality products are in high demand – jams for the US and Asian markets are among the bestsellers. Moreover, private brands on behalf of well-known third-party companies have gained popularity and are highly sought after“, says Remo Manz, Sales and Marketing Director.

Success driven by natural, healthy and innovative products

Bina is convinced that it is particularly due to the continuous customer orientation that products from Bischofszell have become so popular. The company specifically invests in natural, healthy and sustainably produced food articles. It processed almost 30% more organic and about 20% more Terra Suisse products from nature-friendly agriculture in the past year. Furthermore, Bina is actively committed to a healthier diet. It reduces sugar, salt and fat percentages wherever possible. In the past year, the company was in a position to save on 60 tons of sugar in the beverage production alone. Bina regularly surprises its customers with innovations to constantly appeal to the customers‘ taste. You can currently find two varieties of Terra crisps in the shops that were selected from 12,000 taste compositions created by our customers.

The Institute for Organisation and Personnel of the University of Bern under the direction of Prof. Norbert Thom conferred the IOP Award 2011 to Bina for the best idea management in Switzerland in recognition of its committed corporate culture. Moreover, main emphasis was put on various activities in the name of sustainability in the previous year. We cut C02 emissions by 4,356 tons or 19%, respectively, and used 12% less new PET due to the reduction of the packaging weight and the increased use of recyclable material.

Bina is a strong partner of Swiss agriculture, particularly as purchaser of potatoes, spinach and apples. The company actively supports the processing and marketing of Swiss raw materials and is the only remaining processor of applesauce. With more than 900 employees, Bina is the third-largest company in the Canton of Thurgau. It currently offers training to 37 apprentices in ten trades in Bischofszell.

Bischofszell Food Ltd was founded in 1909 and is a company of Migros. Bina is a leading producer of beverages, ready meals, potato and fruit products in Switzerland. Our main customers are the retail and catering trade.
